We have an exciting opportunity for a
Project Manager for the M1 J32-35 Scheme on the Places of Relative Safety (PRS) Programme within the Smart Motorways Alliance.

The PRS programme is to deliver the installation of Emergency Areas to the existing Smart Motorway Network.

The programme overall between all of the Alliance Partners has a value of approximately £360M within RIS 2, with Costain being responsible for the on site assembly of schemes in the northern region.

This role is for the onsite assembly Contract Lead for the M1 J32-35 Scheme.


Job Description/Purpose


The Project Manager is responsible for the delivery of the M1 J32-35 Scheme for Costain within the PRS programme's Northern Region, reporting into the Onsite assembly Partner Lead for Costain.


Key Responsibilities

  • Ensuring the project is delivered safely, within budget, on programme and to the required quality, in line with Alliance and Costain procedures
  • Managing the Alliance and Costain processes relevant to the scheme.
  • Resource planning for the scheme including recruitment.
  • Managing scheme reporting to both the Alliance and Costain for the scheme.
  • Delivering to budget and production targets, programme, and specification
  • Owning the relationship with the area OD teams.
  • Supporting and developing the team under your control.
  • Maintaining a good working relationship with key stakeholders
  • Being conversant with all drawings, specifications, and relevant information for the scheme.
  • Ensure that safe systems of work in accordance with Alliance and Costain procedures and in accordance with best practice are established and utilised on the scheme.
  • Be responsible and work with the teams to ensure work is planned and undertaken in accordance with the Project Safety, Health and Environmental Plan
  • Implement the quality processes in accordance with the Project Quality Plan, with a particular emphasis on defect avoidance.
  • Plan, organise, implement, review and monitor procedures with respect to Environmental impact and maintain overall responsibility for the implementation of the Project Environmental Plan.
  • Identify risks and opportunities, both technical and commercial, and take account of these in developing a strategy for successful project delivery
  • Manage and monitor the progress of work against realistic programme milestones and advise on measures to mitigate delay as necessary, liaising and feeding into the wider PRS programme.
  • Ensure that all subcontractor and supplier plans and procedures are compatible with the discharge of the client's and Costain's obligations and responsibilities
  • Embrace and work with the Alliance setup, working with the other partner organisations to deliver together efficiently.

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

  • Knowledge of NEC Form of Contract and Subcontract
  • Understanding of Engineering Principles
  • Technical knowledge of construction techniques and best practices relating to Highways Construction
  • National Highways / Highways Delivery Experience including working in the high speed road environment
  • Knowledge of Costain delivery methods and processes relevant to on site production.
  • Degree level/HNC/HND qualification in Civil Engineering or relevant professional experience.
  • Minimum 10 years work experience within a similar role with a main contractor
  • Relevant CSCS Card
