Health Care Assistant - Job Description
All healthcare assistants are to provide dignified, compassionate and high quality care.

All staff to deliver care with a person centred approach.

Summary of Roles & Responsibilities
Assist our residents with personal hygiene needs as required and appropriate.
Assist our residents to maintain pressure relief and skin integrity as required and appropriate.
Assist residents with continence needs and complete assessments as required and appropriate.
Provide a safe and comfortable home environment for our residents.
Follow care plans, whilst promoting privacy, dignity and individualised care.

Promote and encourage our residents to make their own choices where possible and always act in the best interests of the individual.

Undertake training in areas of Safeguarding, Mental capacity, DOLS/LPS, Record keeping,
Fire training and any other training provided or that is mandatory to working within the home.


SAFEGUARDING IS EVERYONES RESPONSIBILITY
Key tasks
Assist individuals with personal care.
Assist individuals with diet and fluids and document accordingly.
Provide support and care
Provide good documentary evidence of care provided at point of care.
Recognise changes in needs and respond, report and document accordingly
To remain fully compliant with training competencies
Staff must effectively communicate and report any issues to nursing/senior staff members
Effectively communicate between all departments within the home. We are one team.
All staff to comply with PPE regulations within the home.
Report any defects with equipment or damage to the property.


Accountability
All staff are accountable and responsible for their own actions.


Personal care
Healthcare assistants to follow our residents individual care plans and provide excellent individual care.
Always consider an individuals preferences or requests.


Assisting an individual to wash- When assisting a resident with personal care and assisting a resident to have a wash, staff to ensure they are washing and drying residents properly. Staff to ensure groins, armpits, under breasts are being washed and dried properly.


Nails:

- ensure that nails are kept clean and to trim when necessary.

Oral hygiene- ensure that we are assisting residents with good oral hygiene. Ensure dentures are cleaned and soaked overnight.

Eyes- When cleaning a resident's eyes, use clean wipes for each eye to prevent any cross contamination. Report any concerns.
**Hair
- **ensure we are washing an individual's hair were necessary and brushing and styling appropriately.
**Creams
- **Staff to ensure prescribed creams are being used e.g. emollients, analgesic gels, fungal creams. If staff are unsure as to what the creams are for or were they are to be applied, please check with nursing staff or senior care team.
**Bathing and showering
- **staff to ensure we are providing our individuals to have bath or shower when necessary, appropriate or requested by an individual.

Assisting a resident to dress- ensure we are assisting our residents to dress appropriately and involving them to choose clothes. Consider the environment and take this in to account when assisting individuals to dress. Ensure appropriate footwear is worn especially for residents who mobilise.
**Aids
- **Staff to ensure an individual has any aids they may need, e.g. hearing aids, check they are working and are placed in an individuals ears correctly. Glasses
- ensure they are clean.
**Catheter care
- **Ensure catheter sites are cleaned. If a resident has a catheter, staff need to ensure they are using x2 leg straps when attaching securely to an individuals leg and ensuring the tubing is not kinked to prevent any bypassing or blocking of the tube. Drain legs bags when they are above 200mls to prevent it pulling on a resident. If an individual with a catheter is in bed ensure a night bag is attached and place on a stand and that tubing is not trapped or kinked as this can lead to the catheter bypassing.
**Continence care
- **Ensure we are assisting an individual with their individual continence care needs, assist an individual when required to use the toilet or assist them with continence care. Ensure prescribed continence aids are being used.
**Regular pressure care
- **Staff need to ensure individuals are being assisted with regular pressure relief and that individuals are not sitting in wheelchairs for long periods of times.


All staff to ensure they are reporting or communicating any concerns about an individual to nursing staff/senior care team. Document any concerns or issues.
