Job description:

We're looking for a Private Secretary to lead the work in supporting the Director.

You will lead on keeping the Directors day on track, ensuring they are well prepared with context to meetings, and have insight from a range of topics to hand.


Key Responsibilities:
- supporting the Director, shaping meeting agendas and following up on issues and actions as appropriate
- accurately interpreting and conveying the Directors view to other members of the Senior Leadership Team
- understand and help to articulate the Directors priorities, supporting the wider leadership team to deliver those priorities; managing information and identifying information that should be shared; escalating issues and risks where necessary
- liaising effectively and working in partnership across a range of stakeholders, as well as building and maintaining effective working relationships with other Private Offices
- manage the flow of information to your Director, including triaging requests, and reviewing and commissioning submissions and briefing
- lead the Directors private office, enabling the smooth running, high morale and high performance of the team
- coordinating information, assessing reports and papers, reviewing and commenting on drafts and ensuring a consistently high standard of advice, support and ambition

Person specification:


We're interested in people who have:

  • experience of building relationships and influencing senior stakeholders, managing those relationships effectively
- the ability to work on multiple complex issues at pace and concurrently - executing judgment and utilizing excellent organizational skills to prioritize effectively
- ability to quickly understand the environment and strategic agenda in order to effectively identify and prioritize the most important tasks
- strong communication and engagement skills, with a good ability to persuade and influence others at various levels of an organization on sensitive and complex issues
- experience of operating within a policy or other heavily scrutinised/governed environment at a senior level. Specific emphasis on DDaT
- expert knowledge of agile ways of working and business operations in a digital/tech context. Able to lead and motivate effectively across multidisciplinary teams
- experience of managing individuals and teams, allocating responsibilities and/or packages of work

Selection process details:

The selection process as a standard for all of our GDS roles consists of:

  • An interview
  • We will asses you against the behaviours listed. You may get assessed on your experience and technical elements
GDS offers hybrid working for all employees. This means that everyone does some working from home/remote working and also spends some time in their local office.

You will agree to your hybrid working arrangement with your line manager in line with your preferences and business needs.


  • A reserve list will be held for a period of 12 months, from which further appointments can be made.

Security Clearance:


  • The level of clearance required for this role is BPSS.
