A Porter will undertake a range of duties across the site in all departments as and when required. To provide an efficient and effective Portering service to meet the demands of a busy Acute Hospital.

To provide good working relationships with all stakeholders, staff, visitors, and patients.

To work in a self-motivated and professional manner at all times.


To work well with all disciplines of staff and may be required on occasions to take direction from other professional staff.

To carry out all duties to the agreed standard in accordance with relevant department protocols.

The successful applicant may have contact with patients or service users.

  • Ensure all work undertaken is in line with health, safety, security and Trust policies and procedures
  • To provide a highquality portering service to patients, staff and visitors demonstrating high standards of customer service at all times.
  • Collection and delivery of patients, medical gases, medical records, xrays, pharmacy boxes, specimens, blood products, post, clinical and nonclinical waste,, medical equipment and supplies, and any other items, using appropriate methods of work as directed.
  • The post holder must demonstrate excellent communication skills and have a good knowledge of health & safety. All work must be undertaken in line with Trust health, safety, and security policies and procedures including infection control. When required, you may need to assist with the emergency and evacuation procedures and security situations in accordance with Trust policy
You will be working in a team of two other NHS porters supported by a team of OCS porters. You will also be working closely with the reception staff who will liaise with regarding Ad -hoc tasks.

Also you will be line managed and managed by the on site facilities management who will support you in your daily duties.


  • To provide a high standard of general portering efficiently and effectively. To work in a team of porters, ensuring the safe movement to and from wards, clinics and departments throughout the St. Charles Mental Health Unit site, demonstrating high standards in infection control and manual handling.
  • To move equipment, furniture, beds as necessary between areas of the hospital.
  • Collect waste and recycled waste from disposal holds around the site as and when required.
  • Operate machinery in the department including the compacter.
  • Collect soiled linen and transfer to the central area for collection.
  • Assist with the tidying and cleaning of the grounds and carparks as and when required.
  • Adhere to Information Governance at all times; ensuring that no information obtained through work is communicated to any persons other than those requiring it to complete their duties.
  • Deliver medical gas cylinders from the PCT to the required areas and remove of the empty cylinders.
  • Collect drugs from main pharmacy dispensary and deliver to the relevant areas around the St. Charles Mental Health Unit site
  • Ensure that all reasonable care and precautions are taken to prevent damage and/or accidents to staff, patients and visitors.
  • To assist the Emergency services as and when required.
  • To report any equipment faults or failures to the Site Support Service Manager
  • Ensure that any accidents/incidents are reported immediately to the Site Support Service Manager and that the Central and North West London Mental Health NHS Trust's accident/incident forms are fully filled out, following the correct Policies and Procedures Documentation.
  • Comply with all Trust and departmental policies and procedures
  • To be polite and respectful to patient, staff and visitors and ensure the patients dignity is respected at all times.
  • Maintain a high personal appearance and personal hygiene at all times.
  • Participate in the Trust's annual appraisal system designed to identify objectives and personal development opportunities.
  • Ensure that all mandatory training is up to date
  • The post holder will be responsible for continually maintaining their working knowledge of local practices, policies and procedures and highlight ongoing training and development needs to their manager
