The Role

Job Outline and Responsibilities

In our Modern Foreign Languages Department - Spanish, French, German and Mandarin Chinese
are all offered as mainstream languages with some students studying two languages to GCSE and an
increasing number of students opting to study a language at A Level.

The successful applicant will be passionate about teaching Spanish and promoting language learning.
They will inspire students to appreciate the richness and diversity of the Spanish and Latin American
language and culture. They will be well organised, energetic and willing to go the 'extra mile'.

They will hold Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and have a proven track record of successful Spanish
teaching across different key stages and believe that all students can succeed in languages.

In addition to carrying out the duties of a standard scale post-holder, the Head of Subject will be

responsible for the following:
CURRICULUM, ASSESSMENT AND SUPPORT

x Planning, providing and evaluating curriculum provisions, with the active support of other
members of the department.

x Ensuring that for all departmental courses, appropriate syllabuses, schemes of work, materials and
revision programmes are in place. For each course, these should include clearly defined aims and
learning objectives which are shared with the students.

x Keeping up to date with changes to the external examination specifications. Ensuring that a
member of the department attends in-service courses provided by the Examination Boards.

x Identifying students who are experiencing difficulties and liaising with other members of the
department to review the wider picture. Together, communicate with learning support and
EAL specialists in order to develop suitable strategies to help these students overcome their
difficulties. Ensuring that all departmental teachers are aware of these students and the strategies
that should be adopted to help them.

x Identifying Most Able students and ensuring that the department provides them with suitable

enrichment activities. Working alongside the Most Able Coordinator and tutors to identify

x Ensuring that each student's progress is tracked throughout the course of the year by suitable
means. This should include the use of bench-marking data, assessment data and target setting as
appropriate.

x Advising departmental staff on the correct procedures for completing assessments and reports
for the department. Ensuring that departmental teachers meet the current guidelines for writing
reports.

x Attending parents' meetings and supporting members of the department in those meetings.
Feeding back any relevant information to the department.

x Contributing to the support, career development and further professional development/training
of members of the departmental team.

x Acting as a mentor to newly qualified
