Description

Our Acute Critical Care service at Southend has a wonderful opportunity to join its vibrant community of 5 units on three geographical sites of MSE, each with a distinct profile but a shared culture, brought together in an autonomous directorate managing the equivalent of 46 level 3 beds (flexible mx of level 3 and level 2) across the group with over 2500 admissions a year.

Our Division benefits from excellent executive and operational support with a commitment to meet GPICS standards in full with an agreed future strategy to continue to expand - Phase I (Spring 2021) has already seen the award of an additional £10m/ annum recurrent funding for expansion in addition to a £3.5m award to implement a standardised electronic patient record (ePR, Metavision) across all units - Phase II (late 2022) will seek further expansion but focus on capital investment to support the redevelopment of the Critical Care units.

  • Please note the interview date has been schedule to take place on Friday 28th June 2024.

Your role will ensure that the decision to admit a patient to Critical Care is made only after discussion with a Critical Care Consultant, that all unplanned admissions occur within 4 hours of decision to admit and you will also ensure that all patients admitted to Critical Care have a Consultant directed care plan on admission and all patients admitted are reviewed in-person by a Consultant as urgently as the situation dictates and always within 12 hours of admission.

Our MSE Critical Care units operate on the "closed unit model"; our Critical Care Consultants are expected to work collaboratively with specialty teams but the final decisions on admission, discharge and immediate day-to-day management is the responsibility of the attending Critical Care Consultant.

You will be expected to participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, to provide expert opinion to specialty colleagues when requested, particularly with a view to supporting discussions and decisions on treatment escalation planning if so asked, be expected to communicate effectively with patients and their relatives, providing high-quality verbal and/ or written information and manage discussions regarding treatment escalation planning, resuscitation and end-of-life planning with sensitivity.

You will, in conjunction with other Critical Care consultants be directly responsible for the supervision of and training of junior doctors working within Critical Care.

A high level of Consultant oversight is expected.
