The Carpentry and Joinery Level 2apprenticeship consists of 2.5-year opportunity to learn and to provide support to the Repairs and Maintenance team.
Your duties will include carrying out repairs on timber items such as doors, windows, and fences, measuring up and replacing the damaged wood items.
You will gain an understanding of the work of the team and will work in a supported learning environment whilst working towards a nationally recognised Level 2 apprenticeship.
- Be aged 16 or above and
- Be an Islington resident or
- Islington care leaver or
- Islington school leaver in the last 12 months or
- Be connected to Islington through completion of studies in the last 2 years (at any level) at an Islington based educational institution.
- Pass the course entry tests for example in Maths and English.

The Job -Working as a Carpentry & Joinery Apprentice for the Council you will:
- Visit properties and discuss repair needs with our customers
- Carry out repairs to timber items or replace where required
- Take measurements for items that may require replacement
- Use appropriate tools and work in a safe manner. Training will be provided
- Record actions and decisions on our IT systems. Training will be provided.
Training and Development -As part of your role you will:
- Complete Level 2 Carpentry & Joinery apprenticeshipqualification
- Study Maths and English if you have not already achieved a GCSE or Level 2 equivalent
- Participate in the Council's apprenticeship network and various development activities
- Have access to a buddy/mentor.

After you have successfully completed your apprenticeship, you will have gained valuable workplace experience and attained your Level 2 qualification.
This will improve your chances of finding work within the Council, with other employers or help you move on to a higher-level apprenticeship.
Undertake a development programme leading to aLevel 2 Carpentry and JoineryUse the dedicated time given to complete studies and coursework.
Actively participate in your own development. This includes carrying out duties of your role and completing coursework within agreed deadlines.
With supervision to develop skills and experience in:
- Understanding specifications
- reading and interpreting instructions on repairs job ticket
- Handling materials & components ordering correct materials by calculating resources needed, storing safely, and using correctly to avoid damage and wastage
- Using power and hand tools working safely with correct Personal Protective Equipment to carry out repairs to a high standard.
- Maintaining a clean & tidy work area to ensure a safe working environment for all. Ensure all waste materials are disposed of according to procedures
- Quality assurance check work meets required standards and carry out any further actions where required / instructed.
- Effective communication keeping residents updated on their repair jobs and displaying good customer service by being polite and respectful.
