Due to the expansion the position of Senior Sustainable Engineer has become available to join our successful team based in Manchester to support Costain's diverse multi-discipline projects, Climate Change Action Plan and help achieve our 2035 Net Zero target.

About the Role

  • Supporting Lead Sustainability Engineer to ensure the successful integration and delivery of sustainability in design
  • Supporting Costain's inhouse engineering team to embed sustainable design into all projects
  • Identifying opportunities to deliver sustainable designs, selecting the appropriate tools and engaging the relevant stakeholders
  • Delivering Carbon Assessments and providing support for Life Cycle Assessments
  • Working with Costain's Biodiversity, Natural Capital, Social Value, SHE & LCA experts to ensure their incorporation on projects
  • Identifying opportunities for innovation and the incorporation of low carbon materials, assessing their viability and deploying where appropriate
  • Collating and presenting sustainable design case studies for use in tenders & showcasing Costain's commitment to Sustainable Design
  • Monitoring & reviewing project sustainable design elements, ensuring delivery for clients
  • Communicating confidently and authoritatively with clients, promoting the sustainable design capability
  • Delivering presentations to the Costain team, clients and research partners
  • Remaining at the forefront of sustainable practice through attendance and membership of leading industry research groups
  • Liaising with researchers & academia to discuss & review novel designs & technologies which could be used in the design team
  • Degree qualified working towards Chartership with an engineering or environmental certification body
  • Passionate about sustainability
  • Interest in design stage projects and supporting design engineers
  • Multidiscipline project understanding with a good appreciation for engineering disciplines such as civil, structural, electrical, mechanical & process safety
  • Interest in new and emerging technologies/approaches including Automated Design, Biodiversity & Natural Capital Mapping, WELL Building certification
  • Have an appreciation of temporary works, construction & supply chains
  • Have UK project experience with a working knowledge of current UK regulations and design codes for H&S, environmental and engineering aspects
  • Strong communication skills
  • Strong investigative / research skills
  • Able to demonstrate social responsibility awareness in the context of people, place and planet / ethics, community and environment
  • Be driven to progress and enhance your skills through additional learning, stretch targets and new work areas
