Department Overview
Market Intelligence and Analysis Division (MIAD) is at the heart of the Bank's mission.

It is the Bank's eyes and ears in financial markets - gathering, analysing and interpreting the latest market developments, and using that information to brief the Bank's monetary, financial stability and prudential policy makers.

MIAD plays a central role in designing the market operations and schemes through which the Bank implements monetary policy and provides liquidity insurance to the banking system, supporting decisions of the MPC and FPC.

And it carries out the Bank's strategic objective to pursue fairer and more effective financial markets, using the Bank's influence to catalyse market-led reform.

MIAD has around 55 people, divided into 3 teams: the Market Intelligence Delivery Team (MIDT); the Market Policy Analysis Team (MPAT) and the Market Structure Analysis Team (MSAT).

The role requires coordinating the activity of 70+ MI gatherers within MIAD and across the Markets Directorate and Bank to provide a real-time market monitoring service, gathering insightful MI that influences policy.
  • Bring together market intelligence and analysis to interpret financial market developments, working closely with colleagues around the Bank, including via the crossdirectorate FMA pool.
  • Lead the Bank's Survey of Market Participants (MaPs), preMPC and preFPC processes.
  • Brief Governors, the MPC, FPC and PRC personally on what signal to take from markets, incipient risks, and longer term structural issues, so that policy decisions are taken in full knowledge of the financial markets context and impact.
  • Play a leading role, working with the Future Balance Sheet Unit, Sterling Markets Division, Financial Risk Management Division and others in Markets, in the design of the Bank's future monetary control framework, the development of new policy tools, the design of the Bank's monetary policy and liquidity support operations, and the Bank's management of its own and the Government's FX reserves.
  • Coordinate research on financial markets issues to support analytical work and operational design, taking advantage of the Bank's privileged access to regulatory and transaction data, including trade repository data.
  • Actively support Markets' Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives to attract and inspire the best people to work in MIAD and as MI gatherers. This includes developing and articulating a talent strategy and ensuring the Bank's diversity objectives are reflected in all stages of talent management in both MIAD and the MI function more broadly.
