To develop a top-quality paediatric surgical service achieved through the appointment of a general surgeon of childhood, functioning with the support of Great North Children's Hospital Paediatric Surgeons Expansion of the secondary level surgical procedures offered by North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation trust Maximisation of theatre utilisation at Cumberland Infirmary and West Cumberland Hospital Maximising resource use ensuring surgery appropriate for the resources of a district hospital is undertaken by an appropriately trained and experienced surgeon Formation of a western hub for childrens surgery to enable children to get high quality surgery as close to home as possible Align with the Operational Delivery Networks aims of: Improving quality of care Reducing variation in care Reducing gaps and duplication in provision Optimising existing resources Support safe staffing Delivering best value for the NHS in Cumbria Helping build a sustainable model of service Reducing unnecessary surgery in specialist centre The post is based in the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle and the West Cumberland Hospital (WCH), Whitehaven both of which have paediatric departments.

It is envisaged that outpatient clinics and operating lists will be performed at both hospitals to allow children and families access to this service closer to home.

The appointee will be encouraged to participate in research and to play an active part in clinical governance related activity.

The appointee will also be expected to be involved in a formal Medical Education role at NCIC.

This will form part of the agreed Job Plan for this post.

In addition there may be opportunity to deliver undergraduate medical education at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN) on an ad-hoc basis The appointee surgeon will be expected to undertake the following procedures: inguinal herniotomy >1 year umbilical herniotomy PPV ligation, circumcision orchidopexy where testis palpable (ie., at superficial ring) toenail surgery Future consideration to inviting team members from GNCH to collaborate on cases would be considered for purposes of ongoing clinical training and governance and maintenance of expected surgical standard.

The appointee will have job planned access to CME with the GNCH team to engage in both virtual and face to face meetings on a regular basis Outpatient Clinics New all paediatric surgery conditions from the region both tertiary and secondary level - can be assessed at NCIC and, where appropriate, referred to GNCH whilst also increasing Cumberland Infirmary and West Cumberland Hospital case capacity for suitable patients.

Review GNCH and NCIC post op reviews close to their home; the first post-operative clinic for GNCH patients will be done at GNCH but most subsequent visits could be carried out in NCIC and referred back to GNCH only as needed.
