This is a fantastic opportunity aimed at University students who are completing their second year of University and are seeking a third year work placement opportunity, before returning to University to complete their fourth year.


The Operations Officer opportunity provides a chance to work on various environmental schemes - notably renewable heat and electricity scheme.

You will be involved in audit casework which may include site visits for example visiting a wind farm. This really is a great experience for individuals who have a keen interest in renewable energy. You'll also gain exposure to our business/operations element, our processes and systems Ofgem utilises.

You will also very much be part of the team and participate in team meetings, also gaining exposure to the senior leadership team.

A key element of this role will be data analysis - identifying key risk indicators for non-compliance. Analysing trends in non-compliance and utilising tools such as MS Excel and Power-Bi. Full training on these systems will be provided.


In regards to learning and support, you will gain access to Civil Service Learning which has a wealth of material and information that will support you through your work placement.

You will also be joining an experienced and supportive team and will have access to a 'buddy' for each scheme to help you achieve the most from your experience at Ofgem.


Job description
Delivery and Schemes is part of the delivery directorate of Ofgem. We work on the administration of the government's Environmental and Social schemes. This role sits within the Audit & Compliance Hub and will focus on delivering our audit responsibilities.

The Audit team is responsible for delivering audit programmes through external auditors under the various schemes we administer. We currently administer 10 environmental and social schemes, valued at approximately £9bn a year in consumer and taxpayer's money.


The post holder will be part of the Operational Delivery Profession within Ofgem Delivery and Schemes, and there may be opportunities for deployment to other areas in future - for example within our Operational Delivery team or within Corporate Services.

The Operational Delivery Profession delivers operational excellence across all aspects of service delivery and business support, helping Ofgem to deliver its priorities by administering efficient and trusted services.


The purpose of the Operations Officer role is to support the delivery of operational objectives, working within one or across a combination of scheme portfolios.

These roles could involve, liaising with internal and external stakeholders, identification and investigation of suspected fraud or error, planning and supporting of audit programmes, monitoring energy supplier performance against statutory obligations, risk management, or providing support on specific assurance projects.


Ofgem plays a crucial role in ensuring that the energy markets work in the interest of consumers, both now and in the future.

Key Responsibilities

  • Dealing with reviews and contacting relevant teams and people to manage more complicated cases to conclusion.
  • Assist on investigations into participants or supplier activities that may be noncompliant with the rules or have caused harm to energy consumers
  • Supporting all aspects of operations and scheme related work
  • Proactively review procedures and suggest improvements
