About the Client
'Ann' is 18 years of age and has mixed type quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy. She is bright, lively and engaging, with a great sense of humour. 'Ann' lives with her devoted parents and her two younger sisters. 'Ann' attends a local special needs college and has regular physiotherapy and social appointments to attend throughout her week.

'Ann' loves to be sung to and enjoys music and physical interaction, and to be supported to interact with her siblings. She also enjoys watching DVDs, wheelchair dancing, cooking, bowling, going on trips out and responds well to one-to-one interaction. 'Ann' can't communicate verbally, instead she uses facial expressions, gestures and vocalisations to engage with people and communicate her thoughts and feelings, such as smiling and laughing when she is happy.

We support our clients with recruitment, supervision and management of staff who then work solely with them, usually in their own homes, with our on-going support.


Job Summary

Pay rates:


  • Weekday day shift hours £13.0
  • Weekend day shift hours £15.10
  • Weekday waking night hours £14.3
  • Weekend waking night hours £16.36

Hours and Shifts Available:
The current need is for staff who can work:

  • Waking night on a Friday from 10pm to 8am
- and/or

  • Thursdays and Fridays from 3.30pm to 7pm and one occasional Saturday a month from 9am to 5.30pm

Responsibilities and Duties

The responsibilities of the day support worker, once fully trained, include:

  • Supporting 'Ann' to life a full and varied life, including getting out and about for activities, driving the wheelchair-accessible vehicle (WAV), activities at home, going to college/day services, undertaking her physiotherapy routine, attending appointments and enjoying time with her family and friends.
  • Supporting 'Ann' with all elements of her care, including her personal care, medication and nutrition into her Jejunostomy tube, monitoring her for seizures, monitoring her breathing and providing suctioning as required.
  • Participating and supporting 'Ann' in both online and facetoface sessions with clinicians, both within the community and at home, to include supporting her in her hydrotherapy pool.
  • Providing assistance and support with 'Ann's' communication aids.
  • Maintaining detailed records on your care of 'Ann' in line with the requirements of the Care Quality Commission (CQC).
  • Light domestic duties will also be required, i.e ironing, cleaning, and any other domestic duties relevant to 'Ann's' wellbeing.
  • Waking night shifts include attending to 'Ann's' needs overnight, personal care, and helping 'Ann' to get up and ready in the morning.

Qualifications and Skills

Essential:


  • Able to undertake manual handling tasks
  • Able/willing to be trained to undertake specific medical tasks, e.g. changing Ann's nasal prong, connecting/disconnecting her feeds and use of suction (full training is given in all areas)
  • Excellent communication and social skills
  • Respectful of professional boundaries and parent's values in the way they wish to raise their daughter
  • Ability to follow instructions but to also demonstrate initiative and happy to take responsibility and make decisions
  • Reliable and trustworthy
  • Ability to maintain composure if presented with challenging situations
  • Organised
  • Patient and understanding
  • Flexible with regards working hours (provided adequate notice is given)
  • Dedicated to providing a high standard of intimate care in a respectful and dignified manner

Desirable:


  • Previous experience of working waking nights (for waking night applicants)
  • Previous lone working experience
  • Experience / knowledge of Cerebral Palsy and Epilepsy
  • Experience of working with young adults
  • Sense of humour
  • Willingness to undertake UK and foreign travel if required
  • Experience in working within a family home
  • Professional qualification such as QCF Diploma/NVQ 2 in health and social care
