  • To support and deputise for the Registered Manager, in leading the total staff team (care staff, Education, Health, and Facilities Management) ensuring the effective delivery of a multidisciplinary service to young people in secure care.
  • To develop, implement, monitor, and review systems designed for monitoring progress and reviewing outcomes for young people.
  • To ensure compliance with the Unit's operational procedures to ensure the health and safety of all persons young people, staff, volunteers, visitors within the secure unit.
  • To ensure that staff implement the Unit's policies and procedures so as to maintain the safety and dignity of young people at all times, whilst helping them to develop a positive identity in relation to gender, disability, religious, cultural, racial or linguistic background or sexual orientation.
  • To ensure through regular supervision, training, team meetings, personal staff development etc. that a high standard of service delivery is maintained at all times, especially in relation to the management of casework; and to be responsible for the oversight of case management and supervision of sentence/risk management for all the young people in the Unit.
  • To ensure the range of statutory child care meetings where complex issues including the taking away of liberty and decisions are carefully weighed to manage the work of the team, ensuring workloads and statutory requirements are met with regards to staff levels.
  • To conduct management investigations into complaints made by young people or their placing authority as directed and delegated by the Head of Secure Services.
  • To take a lead role in, and be responsible for, onsite crisis, command and control, debrief and formal recording.
  • To ensure effective service delivery in prescribed areas of formal project development as directed and agreed within the framework of a personal strategic portfolio.
  • To contribute to the strategic business development plan to ensure delivery of a financially competitive service to the Youth Custody Service and thus secure the continued future of the Unit

"Role Requirements" - to give yourself the maximum chance of success please try and ensure your CV addresses the following essential criteria:

  • Diploma in Social Work with substantial relevant experience in a Local Authority child care setting or an equivalent social/health qualification with substantial relevant experience working with young people in a secure setting
  • Knowledge of law, guidance and practice in relation to children and young people with specific knowledge of youth justice and residential accommodation
  • Substantial post qualification experience of working effectively in a social services department or similar organisation, including management experience
  • Experience of managing risk in relation to children and young people and their offence related and risk taking behaviour including risk to self, risk to others and risk from others
  • Experience of leadership and change management incorporating long term objective setting
  • Experienced in thinking and acting strategically and decisive problem solver
  • Experience of managing budgets and resources within a social care setting
  • Able to demonstrate detailed knowledge and understanding of safeguarding issues and the needs of Looked After Children
