Mechanical Design Engineer:

Our client is one of the UKs leading Automotive Engineering companies and they are looking for a talented Mechanical Design engineer to join their fast growing company.


Main Purpose of Role:


Work within a team for design and development of new motor mechanical technologies and drivetrains for electric vehicle systems across a wide range of sectors.

Working within a wider project team the Design Engineer will be working alongside other engineers, helping to deliver mechanical design activities across all products, having interactions with suppliers, process and customer bases.


Key Activities:


  • Design of new transmission and drivetrain technologies including motor and drivetrain integration.
  • Work as part of a team of engineers to aid the successful delivery of projects, within the specified time, budget, to the specification and the required quality standards.
  • Support collaborative project work
  • Review of new and existing designs
  • Support prototype and production build programmes
  • Complete drawings and issue engineering change requests and control
  • Ensuring compliance with design guidelines and provide input into continuous improvement activities.

Education/Qualifications Required:


  • Honours Degree in an appropriate engineering discipline.
  • Professional qualification such as CEng with IMechE, IEE or similar is desirable.

Experience Required:


  • 2+ Years of industry experience.
  • Experience of working in a multidisciplinary engineering project environment.
  • Relevant postgraduate experience/qualifications may be considered in lieu of commercial experience.
  • In depth knowledge and experience in design and manufacture within the automotive sector is preferable.
  • Electric motors, transmissions and/or power electronics is ideal.
  • Experience in NVH techniques and an appreciation of electro/mechanical manufacturing processes is desirable.
  • Experience of designing parts and assemblies for mass manufacture.
  • Experience in plastic and casting design, considering function, cost, manufacturing, assembly, and quality.
  • In depth knowledge of Engineering design and associated techniques including basic mechanics, hand calculations, DFMEA (Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis), analysis packages (Nastran), CAD software packages (Inventor, AutoCAD).
  • Experience with 3DExperience Catia (V6) and the 3DExperience platform are desirable.
  • Awareness of APQP processes.

Skills & Attributes Required:


  • Up to date knowledge in relevant technologies and engineering design techniques.
  • Sound understanding of fundamental engineering and scientific principles.
  • An innovative thinker
  • Prepare and check, drawings are correct and to required standards, they reflect design intent correctly, and that they adequately define parts for manufacture and inspection
  • Flexible and knowledgeable, ability to work across disciplines and share ideas.
  • Analytical and methodical approach to problem solving with the required experience to make key decisions throughout the project.
  • Ability to produce high quality work even while under pressure.
  • Ability to work with minimum technical supervision.
