They are seeking a
Lead Hydraulic Engineer to join their team on a permanent, full-time basis in either the Coventry, Derby or Shrewsbury area.

Commutable from:
East Midlands, West Midlands, Coventry, Birmingham, Leicester, Derby, Nottingham. Relocation support on offer and will be calculated on a case-by-case basis.

The Role


As the
Lead Hydraulics Engineer, you will be responsible for providing hydraulic designs for various water treatment and water infrastructure programmes.


Key aspects of the remit include:

  • Completing hydraulic designs from feasibility through to detailed design, adhering to design standards within the design function.
  • You will develop junior engineers, drive innovation and support the Hydraulics Technical Lead in providing hydraulics support to the Capital design teams.
  • You will be accountable for determining the techniques, templates, tools, and processes required to establish and improve the Capital Delivery Design standards.
  • Designing and delivering; pressurised and free surface flow hydraulic designs, both gravity and pump system hydraulic designs and steady state and transient hydraulic modelling software such as Hades, Infoworks, Varisim etc.
  • You will be the technical lead within the company regarding hydraulic designs, therefor it is expected you will support relevant queries from the c.250 design community and the wider supply chain for the entire capital programmes.

Key Responsibilities of the Lead Hydraulic Engineer:

  • Assess the design capability required to deliver the AMP programme.
  • Drive innovation and develop new approaches and solutions.
  • Communicate improvements to the Design team and hold leaders to account for adoption of standards (encouraging challenge and feedback for the purpose of innovation).
  • Ensure learnings from past investment reviews are evaluated driving updates to standards, frameworks or innovation.
  • Establish a network of external stakeholders to capture learnings, understand innovation and best practice and build into the plans for Capital Design technical standards.
  • Provide input to the L&D strategy for the Design community.
  • Define and create the mechanisms for assuring demonstrated evidence of capability (for Design development).
  • Technical liaison with all suppliers and contractors and a point of contact for new products and ideas in their discipline area.

The Person

Experience Required for the Lead Hydraulic Engineer:

  • Experience in providing technical leadership to a large programme of capital works.
  • The ability to lead input into projects and lead a team of hydraulic engineers.
  • Experience of working in a design environment (Utilities preferred) at a senior level.
  • Implementation of (or extensive use of) quality management systems.
  • Effective at integrating within a matrix organisation.
  • Experienced hydraulic designer (Feasibility through to and including Detailed Design, construction and commissioning).
  • Knowledge of both pressurised and free surface flow hydraulic design.
  • Strong understanding of both gravity and pump system hydraulic design.
  • Knowledge and experience of both steady state and transient hydraulic modelling software such as Hades, Infoworks, Varisim etc.
