We're looking for a Head of Media Relations to join the Financial Ombudsman Service.

This role will be provide strategic leadership for the development and delivery of the media relations strategy, supporting the organisation to achieve its goals through effective engagement with journalists and media outlets.


You will be responsible for leading our engagement with the media - creating, planning and implementing reactive and proactive media strategies to ensure we promote, explain and justify what we do in a positive and engaging way.

You'll advise senior leaders on media opportunities and risks, including the CEO and Chair. You'll be comfortable engaging with a range of journalists, building rapport but also providing necessary challenge where needed.

You will also lead on managing crisis communications.

You will be experienced in measuring the impact of your team's work and using this analysis to improve how we engage with the media.

The role is an important part of the Communications function's leadership team.

You will need to collaborate closely with other senior leaders in the Communications function and the wider Ombudsman Service to blend our media relations work with wider communications activity, to help meet the organisation's objectives.


This is a demanding role which may require you to work long days and, on occasion, weekends - depending on the news cycle - as you will be the main senior point of contact for media and senior leadership out of normal office hours.

To be considered for this role, you'll need to show us that you've got the skills and capabilities.

You'll have to meet the following minimum criteria:
Minimum Criteria

  • A senior media operator with a proven track record of effective reactive and proactive media handling
  • Proven experience of effective, proactive, and influential media handling. Experience of effective crisis communications
  • Strong management and leadership of people, particularly in building and developing teams
  • Ability to gain credibility and respect, influencing and providing reassurance internally at all levels up to and include Executive and Board
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with peers
  • A strong writer and editor
  • Ability to create strong, effective media strategies alongside wider communications activity
  • Excellent communications/news judgement
  • Ability to work out of hours and on call
Desirable Criteria

We would also like you to have the following skills:

  • Strong network of financial, business and consumer journalists
  • Understanding of the financial services sector and consumer interests
