Role Overview:

The Talent Development department supports Markel in creating a successful, sustainable organisation that meets its strategic and operational goals by:

  • Improving performance and productivity
  • equipping employees, from contributors to senior leaders, with the skills, tools and knowledge to perform in their current and future roles.
  • Preparing for the future of work reducing skill gaps by identifying needs and empowering employees to expand their abilities, through both targeted L&D curriculums and experiential development opportunities; developing expertise to outpace our competition.
  • Engaging and retaining employees empowering employees to own their career and development through awareness building and transparency of career growth opportunities.

What you'll be doing:


  • Own and lead all aspects of programme delivery for Markel International's early career programmes (graduate, apprenticeship, internships and work experience)
  • Evaluate, continuously improve and supervise all programmes to meet business requirements and insurance market changes
  • Measure success against objectives of the programmes and proactively work with key collaborators to implement improvements where required
  • Support the Senior Talent Specialist with strategic early careers initiatives, such as design and creation of new programmes, and the enhancement of existing programmes, across the International offices
  • Own and manage all outreach activities for early careers, including management of partnerships, to enhance our brand presence, and support young people from disadvantaged backgrounds entering the workplace
  • Responsible for the recruitment cycle, which is managed by our thirdparty supplier
  • Responsible for all apprenticeship activity including account management, providing expertise and guidance to the business on the apprenticeship levy and all associated administration
  • Embed diversity and inclusion principles in all aspects of programmes, monitor success and proactively make improvements where required

What we're looking for:


  • Have prior experience of the talent development and early careers programmes within a fast moving, international, acquisitive business
  • Have experience in designing, creating and implementing early careers programmes
  • Have experience of successfully handling multiple projects
  • Be able to communicate talent management and early careers information to the business in a commercial and pragmatic way, using simple business language
  • Possess analytical ability to be able to manipulate data and present findings
  • Demonstrate effective organisational skills, paying close attention to detail with an ability to prioritise and work to deadlines
  • Show high levels of integrity and discretion as working in an environment where confidentiality and sensitivity must be maintained
  • Present a professional demeanour and interpersonal skills in order to interact well within the team and with internal and external contacts
  • Possess excellent customer service skills
  • Show high levels of integrity and discretion with a passion for treating people fairly
  • Enjoy working in a handson team
  • Be flexible in terms of tasks performed and hours worked
