An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Haematologist with a specialist interest in Haemostasis and Thrombosis to join a friendly, enthusiastic team at UHDB as a new post, adding to an existing complement of 11 Haematologists.

This is an 11-PA post and we have secured a financial incentive which will be disclosed upon successful interview. Additional PAs could also be discussed.


A range of special interests can be accommodated (taking into account the service needs and job plans), however it is predominantly a Haemostasis and Thrombosis role.

Derby is a Haemophilia Centre with 25 patients with severe bleeding disorders. There are 2 consultants - Dr Angela Mckernan (Haemophilia Centre Director) and Dr Charalampos Kartsios (VTE Lead). An interest or previous experience in haemophilia and thrombosis would be desirable.

However, the appointee will be provided educational support if needed, and the expectation is to lead the Derby Haemophilia Centre.

Currently, approximately 15 new Thrombosis patients are seen weekly. We offer a cancer associated thrombosis clinic (Mr Matthew Fowler, Nurse Consultant). There is also a combined Obstetric clinic, fortnightly, and a combined Paediatric clinic once per month.

There are regular MDT meetings held with the Nottingham Haemophilia centre and strong links with other medical departments, such as respiratory medicine, with whom we conduct a joint Thrombosis MDT once a month.

There are regional Thrombosis and Haemophilia Committee meetings held 3 times a year attended by Derby, Nottingham, Leicester and Lincoln.

There is a postal/telephone outpatient anticoagulation service managed by an experienced anticoagulation nursing team. There is 0.6 WTE bleeding disorders CNS.

Part of this post is to offer care to haematology inpatients. The appointee will have to choose a team, either lymphoid or myeloid/myeloma, for his ward duties.

In-patient therapies are provided on a dedicated, 18 bedded, haematology ward, providing BCSH level 2b care, including induction treatment and salvage therapies for high grade lymphomas.

We have our own Acute Unit for unwell patients (CTAU) run by advanced clinical practitioners with medical supervision and shared with Oncology.

Our department currently accommodates 4 specialist Registrars from the East Midlands Deanery and 3 specialty Doctors. We have also an established teaching program for medical students from the University of Nottingham and overseas.
