Description

The Department of Psychology is in search of a passionate Research Assistant. This is a great chance to be part of a study that focuses on examining the impact of providing caregivers with resources to enhance early child language development. Your primary responsibilities will include supporting the research team to:

  • determine the viability and acceptability of implementing a caregiver text messaging service by delivering it to around 200 families, with roughly 25% of these families having children at higher risk of language delay and receiving additional 1-1 support through video calls
  • assess the feasibility of evaluating child language both at homes and online by gathering data and estimating effect sizes for child language development at three and a half years old, covering all four nations of the UK - as mandated by DfE to BBC Education
  • compose reports on the feasibility and initial study results

As a recent PhD graduate with a background in Psychology, Speech and Language Therapy, or related fields, you should possess the capability to effectively communicate with parents from diverse backgrounds, comprehend the obstacles they encounter, have skills in data management, a solid grasp of the scientific method, and experience in analyzing natural caregiver-child interactions, collecting standardized measures of language development, and preparing research papers for publication.

The Psychology Department at the University of Sheffield stands as one of the largest in the UK and has consistently been recognized as one of the top research departments in all seven UK Research Assessment Exercises. In the 2021 Research Excellence Framework, over 90% of our department's research was rated as internationally distinguished or globally leading.
