Hybrid working - based at Bournemouth Civic Centre

From housing to health, social care to schools, finances to flytipping, bins to bike lanes - we work with the media on a huge range of stories that matter to our residents, visitors, businesses and communities.

We're looking for a talented and tenacious communications and campaigns officer to join our team working on our sustainable travel communications.

South east Dorset's Transforming Cities Fund (TCF) programme is building a multi-million-pound network of new cycle and walking routes and bus improvements across the region, connecting major housing, employment, education and retail centres.

The programme part of BCP Council's Transforming Travel initiative to transform local travel, reduce road congestion and greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality and bring economic and health benefits.

The comms and campaigns officer will be responsible for all elements of external communications about the roll out of the new sustainable travel infrastructure, from advance information about construction to residents and stakeholders to proactive and reactive media relations, digital content, blog creation and newsletter production.

The role will also promote the council's other active travel activities including School Streets and our partnership work with Beryl and Morebus.

This is an opportunity to be part of a passionate and committed marketing and communications team.

The work is professionally stimulating:
the challenges are real, but so are the opportunities and our determination to succeed.

Confident and adept in dealing with breaking news stories across different channels you will need the ability to think on your feet, prioritise and make informed decisions drawing on your communications experience.

You will help deliver proactive media relations activities, plan and secure coverage and support colleagues across the team, which means there will be a requirement to work some weekends and evenings to cover our of hours press office rota.

The role requires a communications qualification (or equivalent experience) with recent relevant experience. Experience of working with media is essential as well as excellent writing skills. We aspire to produce compelling, multi-media communications, so basic photo and video editing would be an advantage.

If you thrive in a fast-paced environment, have a keen news sense and can translate policy into punchy and compelling stories, then we'd love to hear from you.

As a result of the creation of BCP Council in 2019, we are working on simplifying our terms and conditions of service and will be creating a single pay structure which all of our employees will move on to.

It is important to us that we offer benefits that our colleagues value as part of their total employment package and we are reviewing these to make sure we have it right.

We're hoping to implement these changes in 2024 and all colleagues joining us will be included in these changes.
