Job Summary


Language in Action, part of Malvern International, are seeking dynamic, organized and experienced
Welfare Officers for their
Junior Summer School programme in
London and Manchester.

They are the main point of contact for any welfare and safeguarding matters that may arise, and they aim to prioritise the safety and well-being of all students and staff in the centre above else.

Details of Position


At Language in Action, we provide students with the English skills and speaking confidence they need to get the most out of their experience in London or Manchester and well beyond.


Our Welfare Officers act as Designated Safeguarding staff and are directly concerned with the safeguarding and welfare of international students in the centre and during all activities.

They are responsible for all arrangements and administrative duties related to welfare and safeguarding and support the Activity Manager and centre staff in all aspects of summer school management and child protection.


The purpose is to ensure welfare and safeguarding of all students and staff according to company policies and procedures, and to support the Activity Manager in managing the team of activity leaders to ensure that students enjoy a safe and varied social programme that enhances their overall experience.


Main Duties

Welfare & Safeguarding Responsibilities

  • Welfare Officers will be the named DSL of the centre, ensuring the Safeguarding of the students at the centre, whilst maintaining school rules, policies and procedures.
  • Be the main point of contact onsite (for staff, students, GLs) on welfare and safeguarding matters
  • Take an active role in the promotion of the welfare of all LIA students, agents, and group leaders always, and in stressing the importance of good welfare practice to all members of staff.
  • Ensure that students and GLs adhere to the code of conduct laid down by the company, and liaise with Activity Manager and other centre staff on issues of student welfare and behaviour.
  • Responsible to ensure Student forms are collected from all parents and are inclusive of all information required
  • Be fully aware of the students' allocation and special requirements (i.e medical, dietary, etc.)
  • Hold a Welfare meeting with each Group Leader upon arrival to acknowledge any special requirement and deal with them accordingly.
  • Induct Group Leaders on Safeguarding and Welfare policies and procedures upon arrival
  • Organise a Fire induction with the premises staff to be done at students' arrival.
  • Collect, store and organize all the documents
  • Statement of responsibility for GL, agency declarations, group leader code of conducts, activity and tuition staff code of conducts, self
- declarations etc, and any other document required

  • Liase with Area Managers and with Accommodation staff well in advance to make sure allocation lists are done and all rooms are clean and ready before students arrival
  • Liaise regularly with Reception, Maintenance and Cleaning staff to solve any issue promptly
  • Liase with Activity Manager to understand when students need packed meals and organize them with the canteen staff promptly. Inform Group leaders on packed meals collection time/date.
  • Liase with the Canteen staff on all food provision (including special dietary requirements and packed meals for arrival/departure and excursion days).
  • Organise alternative meals and food provision if and when necessary (i.e. pizza nights, external provision for special dietary requirements not gathered at the venue etc., selfcatered breakfast) according to Area Manager's budgetary guidelines.
  • Hold regular meetings and collect regular feedbacks from Group Leaders on students' wellbeing and any issue that may arise
  • Assist in the organisation of student arrivals and departures; this may include checking arrival times, handling room allocations, giving a welcome talk, arranging the provision of food when necessary and a tour of a campus. On departures, checking rooms for damage and ensuring that buses leave in on time to make transport connections.
  • Keep comprehensive written records for the centre and collect all the documentation required by Lia Compliance, this includes Risk Assessments and Welfare Forms
  • Ensure that all policies for the welfare and protection of children are understood by students and adhered by staff and clients. Be conversant with LiA Risk Assessm
