About the role:


We are looking for a talented, motivated individual with clinical expertise in diabetes or obesity / weight management, to join the team in the NIHR Leicester Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) at the Diabetes Research Centre (University of Leicester), working within the internationally-recognised research group of Professor Melanie Davies.


The post holder will support experimental research conducted within the NIHR Leicester BRC Lifestyle Theme, contributing to a diverse research portfolio led by Prof Davies and other senior researchers in the Diabetes Research Centre.

This includes (but is not limited to) research investigating the role of lifestyle, alone or in combination with other clinical management strategies (e.g.

pharmacotherapy, diet, bariatric/metabolic surgery) in promoting metabolic homeostasis and whole-body health in diverse populations with or at risk of diabetes, obesity or other related conditions. Key examples include studies in novel pharmacotherapy in type 2 diabetes and obesity, the interaction between pharmacotherapy and lifestyle in the prevention and management of long-term conditions, and work in the prevention and management of diabetes and multimorbidity in underrepresented groups such as adults with early-onset type 2 diabetes (i.e. <40 years old).


The post holder will contribute to the design and development of new study protocols, data analysis and preparation of research outputs including journal articles and conference abstracts, in both a supporting and lead capacity as appropriate.

They will also provide medical oversight within ongoing studies, particularly in relation to participant safety, screening and consent, clinical review and oversight of physiological assessments where required (e.g. exercise testing and training, skeletal muscle/adipose tissue biopsy, measures of insulin sensitivity etc).


The appointed individual will join the Leicester Lifestyle and Health Research Group, as part of the Lifestyle Theme of the prestigious NIHR Leicester Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) and will be based at the Leicester Diabetes Centre (Leicester General Hospital).

The Centre is internationally recognised for its research in diabetes, obesity, and lifestyle behaviours, and also hosts the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC)

East Midlands, the NIHR Patient Recruitment Centre:
Leicester, and the Centre for Ethnic Health Research.


About you:


This post is most suited to a specialist trainee (ST3 or above) in either Diabetes and Endocrinology or with an interest and expertise in Obesity/Weight Management from an alternative medical speciality.

Previous research and evidence of publication are advantageous but not essential.

You must be a registered medical practitioner holding a licence to practice and possessing MRCP or equivalent. An appropriate honorary clinical contract will be sought from the University Hospitals of Leicester (UHL) NHS Trust.
