Hybrid Working with the expectation to visit County Hall and other sites

Do you have experience of planning transport projects? Do you have knowledge of current guidance and legislation with respect to transport and other related issues? Do you have experience in the development of major projects?

We are looking for a Transport Planning Officer to join our Highways and Transportation service.


Our Team


The Transport Planning team is part of the Network Strategy Group that sits within the Highways and Transportation Service Unit.

The core functions of the team are transport strategy and policy development and dissemination, scheme identification, prioritisation and strategic budget allocation and management, service planning and strategic performance management.


It's an exciting time to join our Highways service, we're an innovative council continually looking at ways to improve the lives of the residents of North Yorkshire.


The role


As our Transport Planning Officer, you will be responsible for helping to identify and prepare transport schemes for the council including helping to manage the County Council list of major transport schemes.

You will also
- identify funding opportunities,
- be involved in the preparation of funding bids
- assist with the development of transport strategy and policy for the County Council, including working on a new Local Transport Plan for North Yorkshire.
- prepare Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plans,
- be involved with projects looking at establishing electric vehicle charging points throughout the county


You will have a varied workload as well as having the opportunity to be involved with the future of transport in North Yorkshire as we move towards a low carbon era.

You may not be on the frontline but you will achieve a sense of pride that you have contributed to making a difference.


What you will bring
You will have the following key skills and experience:

  • knowledge of current guidance and legislation with respect to transport and other related issues, such as planning and economic development,
- be able to demonstrate previous involvement in the development of major projects in the public and / or private sectors and delivering these within tight timelines.

  • Have excellent communication skills both oral and written, with the ability to use a range of techniques to successfully persuade, influence and/or negotiate with others in a range of situations andbe able to produce documents in a range of formats and styles to suit a range of audiences.


Ideally, we are looking for someone who has experience of planning transport projects but this is not essential as training will be provided.

If you have no prior experience please demonstrate how your current skills and experience could be relevant.
