Description

The critical care unit is a mixed 20 bedded area (16 level 3 beds and 4 level 2 beds) arranged as 2 co-located units of 10 beds.

There are currently 15 substantive consultants who provide care to intensive care, as well as services to their base specialty.

The consultants generally work in units of 4 days (Monday - Thursday) and 3 days (Friday - Sunday).

On call is provided on 1:15 first on (overnight) and 1:15 second on (additional evening cover Monday - Friday, additional daytime cover Saturday and Sunday).

Minimum unit staffing is one consultant and one trainee for each 10 bedded unit. There may also be senior trainees in intensive care medicine or from other medical specialties.

There are also three foundation year 1 trainees and three substantive Advanced Critical Care Practitioners.

Glasgow Royal Infirmary provides tertiary care for Burns, Pancreatic disease, complex Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery, Bariatric Surgery, Abdominal and Musculoskeletal Sarcoma Surgery and Gynaecological cancer.

The Regional Plastics service and the Invasive Placental Disease service are also located at Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

We have an active research programme, in conjunction with the University department of Anaesthesia, Pain and Critical Care.

The existing consultant body has varied interests and expertise including health improvement, trauma, education, ventilation and respiratory disease, ethics, diagnostic error and academic critical care.

The job plan would be able to accommodate some sessions in another service.

The most common service commitment outside critical care is Anaesthesia - it may however be possible to accommodate work in other specialities.
