The role
Our Veterinary Care Assistants, known as Patient Care Assistants, are an integral part of the team in practice.

You will be supporting the team by performing a variety of duties, such as maintaining kennels and the general environment following cleaning protocols, feeding animals, animal handling and behaviour, greeting clients and helping on reception, reporting back to and assisting nurses with patient care and preparing medical equipment and maintaining high clinical standards throughout the practice.

This is a full time position 43 hours per week with a weekend rotation

Key accountabilities

  • Assisting the veterinary surgeons and nursing team
  • Cleaning all areas
  • Assisting with restraining animals
  • Assisting with the preparation of daily surgical procedures
  • Assisting with nursing and care of inpatients
  • Helping to admit injured, ill or stray animals
  • Working on reception
  • Answering incoming calls, booking appointments, welcoming owners and their pets in a cheerful, helpful and professional manner, taking payments for treatment and sales of pet shop items
  • Maintaining client records, scanning and filling, receiving stock orders, cash handling and daily cashing up Calling owners with information (reminders, collection of orders etc)
  • Informing owners of various offers and plans
  • Discussing preventative health care with clients, i.e. vaccinations, flea and worm treatments
  • Delivering outstanding client and patient care
  • Completing tasks assigned by the nursing and vet teams necessary for the efficient running of the practice
  • May be required to help out at other branches

Skills and experience
Essential requirements

  • Confident communicator, both verbally and in writing
  • Friendly and personable attitude, with an empathetic approach
  • Passionate about the care and welfare of animals
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Alternative qualifications e.g., Veterinary Care Assistant Certificate, Animal Nursing Assistant Award or National Diploma in Animal Care will be accepted when supported with full Level 2 qualifications in Maths and English i.e., Level 2 Functional Skills or GCSE at grade C or above.

At Stanhope Park Veterinary Hospital our exceptionally high standards can be seen consistently throughout our 3 practices.

The biggest practice is based on Stanhope Road in Darlington and is an RCVS accredited hospital which can accommodate all types of major surgery.

We also have a separate Cats and Exotics Clinic just round the corner on Duke Street, which is an extension of our Stanhope Road Hospital, allowing us to treat cats and exotic species in a dedicated stress-free environment Our Middleton-St-George clinic has been providing clients with consultations and preventative treatments for many years now, and we have recently undertaken major renovation work at this surgery, allowing us to extend our services to include outpatient surgical procedures.


Stanhope Park is situated in the centre of Darlington, adjacent to a beautiful park perfect for a relaxing lunch break.
