is a precision aerospace engineering facility in the UK, which manufactures components and assemblies for aircraft industry around the world, with major customers such as Airbus, Leonardo helicopters and BAE Systems.


The remit of the role of Machine Operator is to operate set up, operate, and tend variety of metal working machines (including mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic and CNC controlled equipment) so that the resulting product meets quality requirements within the established production deadlines.


Main duties and responsibilities

PRODUCTION

  • Deliver output targets in line with work to lists.
  • Interpret engineering planning documents and specification sheets, following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) where provided.
  • Ensure equipment used is of sufficient quality to manufacture to customer specification, reporting any that is not prior to use.
  • Ensure the job card is signed and stamped for prior operations before any work is started.
  • Load workpieces, material, and/or solutions into machines.
  • Set up, operate, and tend a variety of metal working machines (including mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic and CNC controlled equipment) to saw, cut, shear, slit, punch, crimp, brake, notch, bend, straighten, forge, stamp, etc. metal material making single, multiple or successive passes in accordance to standards and requirements.
  • Start / operate machines, monitor their operations, and record operational data.
  • Test, adjust, etc. machine speeds and actions, according to product specifications.
  • Install, align, set and lock specified punches, dies, cutting blades, and/or other fixtures in rams, beds of machines, etc. using gauges, templates, feelers, shims, hand tools, etc.
  • Perform autonomous maintenance on machines (e.g. lubrication, bolt tightening, cleaning, inspection and monitoring.)
  • Position, align, and secure workpieces against fixtures, stops on machine beds, on dies, etc. in order to produce parts, materials when making single, multiple or successive passes and meeting requirements.
  • Clean and ensure parts are of an acceptable standard before submitting to next production stage.
  • Complete all aspects of related operational documentation.

QUALITY

  • Ensure that a clean and tidy work area is maintained throughout the shop floor, and ensure parts are correctly stored and protected.
  • Ensure all parts produced are in line with drawing and specification requirements, reporting any that are not through the use of the NCR process.

HEALTH & SAFETY

  • Promote and work safely at all times, complying with all safety regulations.
  • Adhere to company PPE requirements.

PEOPLE

  • Liaise with all other departments as required to ensure smooth and efficient progress of all production schedule requirements.
  • Train and coach other employees as needed.
  • Communicate and where necessary escalate any issues to line management.
  • Attend and proactively collaborate in team meetings, onetoones and continuous improvement initiatives.

AD HOC

  • Undertake duties as a first aider or fire warden on a rotational basis within the department.
  • Complete any other reasonable duties as required by the Business.

Person specification

ESSENTIAL

  • Valid unrestricted right to work and live in the UK.
  • Time served apprentice or HNC in mechanical engineering or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 3 years' related work experience in a manufacturing or engineering environment.
  • Able to interpret work instructions and engineering planning documents, identify and use the appropriate equipment to manufacture parts to customer specification.
  • A good communicator, able to build positive relationships with both colleagues and customers.
  • A professional and proactive individual who takes personal responsibility for resolving problems and delivering results on time.
  • Able to work flexibly in line with business requirements, which may include working overtime and travelling to other sites on occasion.
  • A team player who shares knowledge and experience with colleagues, and is positive and proud of doing a great job.

DESIRABLE

  • Previous experience of working in the aerospace industry.
