Description

Why should I choose Somerset Council?

Well, for a start, we're a hugely ambitious council, committed to improving lives for the residents, communities and businesses of Somerset.

And that's why we're working so hard to build a sustainable organisation with a culture that rewards, values and recognises our staff, and gives everyone here the opportunity to grow and develop, personally and professionally.

If you're looking for a place where your work truly matters - where YOU truly matter - we might be just right for you.

With core hours between 9:00 - 5:00, Monday to Friday, we promote a healthy work-life balance and offer
flexible working arrangements wherever possible, including working from home.

What will I be doing?

We're working to enhance the delivery of local services here in Somerset - and you'll be a key part of that.

Based in our Highways Maintenance team in
Glastonbury, you will be instrumental in the day-to-day management of the Highway Service.

A typical day will involve:

  • Managing a specific part of the highway network, analysing local highways situations, solving problems, and identifying priority areas for maintenance and improvement.
  • Maintaining regular contact with the public and their representatives, providing technical advice, direction, and expert local knowledge.
  • Building excellent relationships with the local community.

What kind of experience or qualifications do I need?

Whether you're looking for a role where you can develop in your highways career or want to use your expertise to benefit the community, we want to hear from you.

But it will really help if you have the following:

  • Practical experience of highways engineering.
  • Able to identify, prioritise, and order necessary maintenance works.
  • Able to evaluate information and identify solutions.
  • Able to organise a diverse and demanding workload.
We offer ongoing support, training and guidance to help you be the best you can be.

Good technology is provided to help you stay connected to your team and manager through virtual meetings, team check-ins and service sessions.

What will I be offered in return?

We are proud to offer an environment that is supportive and rewarding, working as part of a team who are passionate about the work they do to improve the lives of people in Somerset.

We offer great training and development opportunities, with supportive management.

As well as this, we have some fantastic employee benefits available:

  • We promote a healthy worklife balance and offer flexible working arrangements wherever possible, including working from home.
-
27 days annual leave (plus bank holidays), with the opportunity to purchase additional leave.

  • Staff discounts in gyms.
  • Employee Assistance for the times you may need some support and a variety of employee wellbeing services.
  • Auto enrolment onto our generous Pension Scheme and optional pension enhancement through our Additional Voluntary Contribution scheme.
  • A Flexible Benefits Scheme via salary sacrifice to obtain a cycle for work, computers, mobile phones and health screenings.
  • My Staff Shop offering discounts in shops, online shopping, restaurants, cinema tickets, insurance benefits and more.

Anything else I should know?
The salary for the role is Grade 12, ranging from £24,496 to £27,852 per annum
