Job Purpose

A recognised expert who will lead the Molecular Analysis Facility with responsibility for the planning, management and operation of this significant technical service ensuring appropriate use of staff and resources to ensure its efficient organisation and sustainable development.

The post-holder will have a key role to play in encouraging widespread, equitable and appropriate use of the Facility ensuring that it becomes and remains cost-effective.

The post-holder will be a highly skilled research technologist with extensive experience in RNA and DNA next generation sequencing (NGS) techniques and will act as a research and information resource within and external to, the Facility to provide specialist expertise and appropriate guidance to users, together with advice relating to experimental design and training.

The post-holder will collaborate with academic and research staff (including industry) and be responsible for the development of innovative methodologies that will be key features of the role as will the input to various taught courses including the provision of research projects for undergraduate and postgraduate students as required.

The post-holder will also take a lead role in advising on the future planning vision for the Facility including an equipment strategy.


Main Duties

Strategic and Scientific Leadership

  • Provide specialist expertise and knowledge in the fields covered by the Molecular Analysis Facility and act as the main point of contact for the users and clients of the Facility.
  • Make a leading contribution to shaping of research plans and ensure the Facility is equipped to deliver a highquality cuttingedge NGS service to users.
  • Develop and introduce new innovative methods that will improve and extend the services of the Facility.
  • Develop a national profile for the Molecular Analysis Facility.
  • Maintain an uptodate and thorough knowledge of the literature and developments in the fields covered by the Facility.
  • Attend meetings, conferences, workshops, seminars, and symposia in the fields covered by the Facility and present results whenever possible.
  • Ensure that the Facility produces reliable, highquality data for its clients and publishing results whenever possible.
  • Lead and take responsibility for new proposals for equipment acquisitions.
  • Develop standard operating procedures for all equipment within the Molecular Analysis Facility.
  • Direct training of Facility staff in sample handling, library preparation and equipment use to the point at which they can run experiments for Principal Investigators on a costed basis.

Business Management

  • Work with University staff to obtain funding for equipment usage, service provision and staff time.
  • Work with external academic institutions and commercial clients as a means of developing new income streams.
  • Work with the Head of Facilities, Facilities Advisory Board, College and University to obtain funding for new equipment purchases.
  • Ensure that the College and external users are kept informed of the existence and potential uses of the equipment and services in the Facility and where possible, identify new research and business opportunities.
  • Ensure that the clients and users of the Facility are provided with sound, specialist advice on scientific and technical issues in fields covered by the Facility.
  • Ensure that client inquiries about services and equipment are answered and that quotes for work are supplied promptly.
  • Ensure that agreed project outputs are provided and results are communicated to clients in the agreed time frames.
  • Manage commercial projects.
  • Ensure that monthly invoices for equipment usage and services are supplied to the College Finance Office.
  • Meet regularly with the Head of Facilities and Finance Business Partner to discuss the Facility budget, charge rates, and relationship with the wider MVLS Shared Research Facilities.
  • Monitor and control expenditure.

Operational Management

  • Assume overall and final responsibility for the operational management of the Facility.
  • Provide line management of personnel.
  • Manage, motivate, and assign duties to personnel. Ensure they work well both individually and as a team, set standards for their work, and ensure their development and training needs are assessed and, where possible, met.
  • Assist the personnel with client inquiries, scientific discussions, costing of work, instrument training, monitoring instrument usage, setting equitable guidelines for access, scientific and technical approaches and problems, data interpretation, and reporting of results to clients.
  • Ensure the facility functions safely, efficiently, and effectively within the principles of the quality management system and appropriate health and safety regulations.
