About Us:


  • As Great Britain's electricity system operator (ESO), we sit at the heart of the electricity system, using our outstanding engineering and commercial expertise to balance electricity supply and demand. Ultimately, we keep the electricity flowing directly to where it's needed, second by second. As you may have seen the Government and Ofgem have asked the ESO to take on new roles and responsibilities to help deliver netzero.
  • Becoming the Future System Operator for the whole Energy System is a critical step to help deliver a reliable and clean energy transition for all. The ESO, including all of its existing roles, will be at the heart of the new Future System Operator, taking on additional roles with a whole energy system mindset to drive progress towards net zero while maintaining energy security and minimising costs for consumers.

About The Role:


  • As we separate into a standalone entity and transition to being the Future System Operator our roles are expanding and as such, we need to grow our legal team. Our General Counsel is responsible for a number of areas across the business (assurance, risk, market monitoring, early competition, cosec and legal) and is looking for a second in command to lead the legal support for the ESO.
  • We currently have a team of 6 lawyers but are rapidly looking to expand the team, hoping to have at least 11 lawyers in the team by April. At least 6 of these lawyers we anticipate will report directly into the successful individual for this role, alongside a data officer who will be responsible for supporting the business in responding to data requests (such as under the Environmental Information Requests).

Key Accountabilities:


As part of this critical role your accountabilities will include:

  • Being involved in certain higher-risk matters and will be there as a point of escalation, the role will be to be the first point of contact for all legal advice, and ultimately responsible for managing all day-to-day legal matters. You will be responsible (with input from the General Counsel as needed) for identifying the most productive and cost-effective course of action and deploying appropriate resources.
  • A wide variety of work in the organisation with the key areas of support generally required in commercial, IT, regulatory, procurement and energy law.
  • Daytoday supervision of a team of around 1
  • Management of external lawyers and legal budget.

About You:


Critically you must have:


  • Extensive Lawyer experience someone who has worked at a senior level in an inhouse team.
  • A passion for the energy sector.
  • The ability to be proactive, sensible, pragmatic, commercial and can act autonomously.
  • The ability to drive results and a need for the company to succeed.
  • The willing to think differently and embrace innovation. For example, the use of legal tech and tools.
