Department of Politics:


The Department of Politics is seeking a suitably qualified Research Associate to work alongside Professor Tony Heron, supporting him through engaging in a range of research and impact-related activities.

The role is required to support Professor Heron during his term as Head of Department and will be departmentally funded for a period of up to four years to coincide with this term.

Professor Heron's research interests cover a wide range of issue areas and sub-disciplines, but expertise in either/and the political economy of trade, food/agriculture or environmental politics will be a distinct advantage.

As well as supporting Professor Heron's research, you will be given the opportunity to develop your own research through mentoring, peer support as well as professional development and training.

There will also be opportunities to teach classes in your area of expertise.


Role:


The main purpose of the role will be to support Professor Heron by producing research under his supervision, including: conducting literature surveys and reviews, archival research, documentary analysis, interviews and quantitative mapping/modelling.

You will be expected to take the lead in drafting conference papers, journal articles and book chapters, as well as attending and participating in national and international workshops and conferences.

You will identify opportunities for exploiting research impact through publications; will participate in the organisation, coordination and implementation of key events such as seminars, workshops and other public engagements with relevant stakeholders.

You will also be responsible for drafting and collating the necessary supporting evidence for a potential impact case study suitable for inclusion in the next Research Excellence Framework (REF) exercise.


Skills, Experience & Qualifications needed:


  • First degree in Political Science or Economics (or related discipline)
  • Working towards or completed a PhD in political economy, international trade or environmental politics, ideally with a focus on food or agriculture
  • Advanced knowledge of international political economy and related fields
  • Knowledge of a range of research techniques and methodologies
  • Research expertise in an area that will complement and enhance the department's research strategy and goals
  • Ability to write up research work for publication in high profile journals and engage in public dissemination
  • Ability to develop research objectives, projects and proposals for won and join research, with the assistance of a mentor if required
  • Competency to make presentations at conferences or exhibit work in other appropriate events
  • Experience of carrying out both independent and collaborative research
  • Experience of writing up research work for publication
  • Ability to work as part of a team and also to work independently using own initiative
