The Department of Endocrine & Thyroid Surgery at Imperial is a tertiary referral centre for thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal surgery.

It is the largest service of its kind in the UK performing in excess of 700 operations per annum including 350 thyroidectomies, 300 parathyroidectomies for primary, renal and re-operative disease and 50 adrenalectomies.

Hammersmith is the West London Thyroid Cancer Centre with over 75 new clinically significant thyroid cancers treated per annum. It is also the regional adrenal cancer centre. All aspects of parathyroid and adrenal surgery are undertaken with thoracoscopic parathyroidectomies and laparoscopic and retroperitoneoscopic adrenalectomy. The department is actively involved in clinical research.

There is a weekly thyroid cancer
MDT as well as a dedicated endocrine surgical
MDT where complex parathyroid, adrenal and neuroendocrine disease is discussed.

The registrar post is intended for surgeons wishing to gain experience of high level endocrine surgery.

Key areas of responsibilities


The Endocrine Surgical Registrar will have a key role in the coordination and provision of endocrine surgical care at Hammersmith Hospital.

They will receive comprehensive exposure to the diagnosis, work up, perioperative care and operative surgery.

It is expected that they work with the Senior Fellow in Endocrine Surgery, Deanery registrar, SHO and consultants to help deliver the service.

General responsibilitie


The Endocrine Surgical registrar will assist the Fellow in the arrangement of operating lists and be involved in patient management on the wards and in clinic.

Responsibilities:


Clinical duties include participating in patients' care with the opportunity for on call duties; attending out-patients, theatre sessions covering endocrine surgery patients.

It is expected that all administrative tasks relating to clinics and thetare lists are also undertaken.
