We are looking for a qualified and experienced supervisor to support our counsellors delivering relationship counselling to couples and individuals.


This part time role is to provide clinical supervision and case management support to counsellors employed by Relate Birmingham and to work as part of the clinical team to maintain high quality, safe, ethical services and develop practice.

You will also work closely with the Centre management to support the delivery and development of viable and sustainable services.

The post includes carrying a small client caseload and supervision with us.


We are offering a hybrid approach to working - with some work at home and some at our Birmingham Centre near Five Ways.

Supervision will be delivered face to face or via webcam.

We expect an element of the hours will be fixed and others will be able to be flexible to meet the requirements and needs of the service and supervisees.

The nature of supervisory responsibilities will require daytime and evening meetings with supervisees and counselling supervision groups.

Liaison and consultation with the Clinical Lead and attendance at Risk Management and team meetings are also required, as well meetings with the National SPC on attending the Supervisor Group.

We will also consider this work being undertaken on a self-employed basis.


Key Tasks

Supervision & Consultation


1 To provide one-to one and group supervision and case support to your allocated supervisees at an appropriate level according to their caseload and experience.


2 To provide additional support between supervision sessions to supervisees needing guidance or expert direction or assistance with problems or crises.


3 Work as part of the clinical team, contributing to supporting service and contract delivery, and being part of the duty cover rota and holiday cover (this is reciprocal).


4 Liaise and consult with the Clinical Lead, Service Manager, Senior Practice Consultant and Practice Helpline as required and attend management and safeguarding meetings.

5 Offer advice and consultation to staff on practice issues consistent with the role.

6 Ensure appropriate case management including allocation of suitable cases to trainees.


7 Ensure all safeguarding concerns of your supervisees are responded to and managed in line with our procedures and policies.


8 Ensure safe practice and the wellbeing being of clients is considered, particularly in relation to issues such as safeguarding, domestic abuse, suicide ideation.


9 Provide support to both experienced and trainee counsellors and placements, including assessing ongoing training needs and opportunities for development.


10 Ensure supervisees maintain appropriate case records and are familiar with their responsibilities regarding confidentiality, data protection, DBS and mandatory CPD.


11 Work with supervisees to ensure that outcome measurements are being completed, recorded and used to inform the client work and meet service needs.


12 Contribute to the recruitment, induction and training of new counsellors and support reviews and appraisals, performance or disciplinary processes or complaint procedures.


13 Contribute to essential communication, for example changes in policy and procedure, ensuring this is disseminated to your supervisees and understood.

14 Provide regular reports and feedback to the Clinical Lead on counsellor attendance, issues or training needs.

15 Maintain a client caseload within Relate (or elsewhere) and receive appropriate supervision and training.

16 Record all supervisory activity on systems, maintaining accurate and timely records at all times.


17 Work to the policies and procedures of Relate Birmingham and achieve and maintain registration on the Relate Supervision Register.

20 To take responsibility for professional development and adhere to the ethical standards and requirements of the relevant codes of practice.


21 Keep up to date with latest research, information and good practice in the field of relationship therapy and counselling.


22 To keep informed on the policy and practice of the Relate Federation and to work in co-operation with the practice and training teams at Relate.

23 Understand and comply with Relate Birmingham's policies and procedures.


24 This post may occasionally be required to attend external events or meetings as a representative of the organisation and to act as an ambassador for Relate Birmingham.

25 To undertake mandatory training or other activities to fulfil the objectives of the post.
