About the Role:


South Rural PCN are recruiting a PCN Digital Lead to work closely with the PCN Manager and member practices IT leads/managers ensuring that IT systems operate securely, efficiently and effectively.

They will also be required to attend PCN meetings to advise the PCN clinical directors and member practices on IT related matters.


The post holder will increase access to care for patients, by supporting the adoption of new technology and other initiatives to improve the care offer, and enabling PCN staff to work more effectively to support the sustainability of general practice services.


The PCN Digital Lead is responsible for undertaking a wide range of IT systems management duties in support of the interoperability of clinical systems across the PCN especially where there may be different clinical systems in operation within member practices.

They will, as directed by the PCN Manager, play their part in ensuring that the data recorded across the PCN clinical systems is as far as possible uniformly consistent by use of common SNOMED codes and templates for the recording of patient information.


Duties may include but are not limited to maintaining the interoperability of the PCN IT infrastructure which includes PCs and telephony systems, providing support to PCN practice IT leads and managers and ensuring all issues which are unable to be resolved at PCN level are escalated in a timely manner to the appropriate provider.


The following are the core responsibilities of the PCN Digital Lead There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks.

This will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels.

  • To act as the PCN point of contact for all PCN IT related matters, establishing positive working relationships with:
  • PCN member practice IT leads/managers
  • IG leads within member practices
  • To improve adoption of new technology to enhance patient access and experience and increase PCN productivity
  • To review and improve the PCN's digital maturity
  • To cooperate with practices and, where practicable, standardise the IT management processes across the PCN
  • To provide advice and answer IT related queries from PCN member practices of the main IT systems and software programmes used within the PCN by attendance at related training courses
  • To assist, where required, in facilitation of improved access (IA) and extended hours working across all PCNs, be it at PCN practice level or selected hub locations
  • To identify and be proactive in your training needs and development and as agreed with PCN or practice management
  • To support in the delivery of enhanced services and other service requirements on behalf of the PCN
  • To participate in the management of patient complaints when requested to do so and participate in the identification of any necessary learning brought about through clinical incidents and nearmiss events.
  • To undertake all mandatory training and induction programmes
  • To partake in the spectrum of clinical governance matters
  • To attend a formal appraisal with their manager at least every 12 months. Once a performance/training objective has been set, progress will be reviewed on a regular basis so that new objectives can be agreed
  • To maintain a clean, tidy, effective working area at all times
  • Excellent IT skills including experience of working with the following: MS Server and Desktop operating systems, Windows, SAN Technology, antivirus products, network infrastructure appliances, firewalls
  • Experience of establishing effective office administrative systems
  • Experience of working in a health care setting
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) including a clear, polite telephone manner
