Based in Cheltenham, you will join a team that is here to share the Gospel and be part of the rhythm and life of the school, with a focus on 7-13 year olds, or 14-18 year olds.

The Chaplaincy

Reporting to the Senior or Assistant Chaplain, the Ministry and Leadership Trainees are embedded in the rhythms of life in our schools, holding responsibilities for sports coaching, pastoral care, and pupil-facing ministry, with the possibility of gaining teaching experience.


Our aim is to present the Gospel and encourage young people in their relationship with Jesus in an accessible way, through our regular Chapel services and assemblies, prayer meetings, Bible Studies, annual school missions, Christian Unions and residential trips.


This role offers a fantastic opportunity to get immersed in the school community, working closely with our Graduate Teaching Assistants, and benefitting from the accommodation and meals provided.

Duties

  • Encourage all pupils in their faith.
  • Take part in the life of a busy boarding school, which includes regular day, evening, and weekend duties plus school trips.
  • Help run Bible studies
  • Organise opportunities/courses for young people to ask questions of Christianity.
  • Assist the Chaplain in the administration and publicity of the Chapel and CU programmes.
  • Speak at Chapel, House Assemblies and CU across all schools
  • Speak at the Prep and Pre-Prep Schools
  • Mentor pupils
  • Assist with the Confirmation course
  • PE & Games coaching: assisting coaching staff with PE and Hockey / Rugby / Netball sessions, and matches and supervision of students at away matches.
  • Assist the boarding community in the putting on and running of social events for boarders in the evenings and weekends.
  • Help with covering lessons during a teacher's absence and supervision of work rooms
- note: there is training and support available.

Person Specification

  • There are several roles that are either junior [713] or senior [1418] facing.
  • A committed Evangelical Christian with a heart for young people
  • A willingness to stand up in front of groups of young people and staff to lead services and speak. (Help will be given in this area from the Chaplain)
  • Approachable and with a good sense of humour
  • Flexibility and adaptability are essential, as is the willingness to undertake additional duties and responsibilities that may arise
  • The ability to work using their own initiative and as a part of a team is essential.
  • A willingness to be involved in all aspects of boarding school life
  • Computer literate
  • An ability to assist in sports coaching, (especially hockey, netball, or rugby support is available if this isn't your specialty)
  • We may give a specialism to each role depending upon personal gifting (e.g., admin, marketing, technology)
  • A getstuckin attitude and willingness to try new things on our trips.

Dean Close School is a co-educational day and boarding school which provides continuity of education from age 2 to 18.

The School was established in 1886, and is set in 50 acres of parkland in the centre of Cheltenham.

In 2015 the Dean Close Foundation was formed, when the School acquired St John's on-the-Hill Preparatory School and three nurseries in the Chepstow area.

In 2017 the Foundation purchased a further two nurseries, Tree Tops in Cheltenham and Gloucester, taking its total to five.
