Head of Department of Law and Professional Legal Education
SBU/Department: Hertfordshire Law School
FTE: 1.0fte working 37 hours per week
- _Part time will also be considered_)
Duration of Contract: Permanent
Salary: AM1 £64,546 to £71,305 (or pro rata) depending on skills and experience
Annual Leave: 35 days pro rata plus standard public holidays and an additional 4 days- including the closure of our office between Christmas and New Year
Location: De Havilland Campus, University of Hertfordshire, Hatfield

  • The School teaches long standing, and very successful, LLB and LLM programmes, including professional LLM programmes for students aspiring to be a solicitor or barrister, in a £10m purposebuilt Building on the University of Hertfordshire's de Havilland campus, which includes a fullscale replica Crown Court Room and stateoftheart teaching facilities.

    Main duties & responsibilities
  • Hertfordshire Law School is looking for individuals who are motivated about working with students and staff, as well as members of the University's regional legal community, and have a keen appreciation for the University's Transforming Lives vision.
    Skills and experience needed
  • You will have proven management and leadership skills, with experience of managing Programmes of Study within the Law discipline.
  • You will have knowledge and expertise within the Law discipline and of strategic developments in the Higher Education sector and student management systems and processes. You will also have experience of analysing multiple sources of data and developing recommendations. Knowledge of financial and HR systems is desirable. Experience of chairing formal meetings, developing business plans or financial and strategic planning, and experience working with Academic Board or its subcommittees in desirable.
  • You will have line management experience. You will be able to motivate and manage teams, network and form good working relationships across the university and with external organisations including external professional bodies.
  • You will have credibility in the education sector, with excellent interpersonal skills. You will be a selfstarter with a positive approach to problem solving and excellent organisation and management skills, particularly when working under pressure and managing multiple tasks with conflicting deadlines. You will be flexible, adaptable and able to work within a team, with excellent oral and written communication skills and cultural awareness, and an ability to build positive team spirit.
  • You will have an understanding of the University's strategic plan, regulations and processes and employability plans. You will be proficient in English, ability to use technology to enhance delivery to students, have excellent organisation and selfmanagement skills and the ability to negotiate with stakeholders. You will have a highly developed sense of professionalism and a commitment to student graduate success, including a commitment to equal opportunities and to ensuring that students from all backgrounds have the support they need to succeed and progress in their careers.
