An exciting opportunity to join the general and colorectal cancer surgical team to help develop a model of surgical care that will deliver high quality, timely cancer surgery in a high volume surgical site.


The locum post is offered to facilitate learning with a dual site post (Worthing hospital and Royal Sussex County hospital sites) for elective surgery and emergency and OPD respectively.

Supporting the team to review and enable a single UHSussex CRC MDT, develop care pathways and engage with patient engagement and safety reviews.


As the new model of surgical care further substantive consultant posts will be developed, alongside nursing, theatre and wider MDT posts.

Attendance at CRC MDT and support the work to merge to single CRC MDT.

Outpatient and if requested endoscopy at RSCH & PRH sites to support local diagnostic and elective pathways.

Elective surgical work (general and cancer ) at Worthing hospital, combined with 1:8 on call rota at RSCH site.

The on call will include major trauma attendance and consultant lead support to resident junior doctors.


A significant component of this post is to understand the dual site working, enable the teams to develop and formalise (with patients and stakeholders) a model of delivery of CRC surgery in a timely manner, in a high volume centre with high volume surgical practice.

The clinical duties of the post include the following:
Integration and development of the elective colorectal cancer service on the Worthing site.
Development of the Emergency General Surgery Service
To ensure patient safety and governance is supported and delivered
Provide emergency general surgery in dedicated emergency theatre list
Lead ward rounds of emergency surgical and major trauma patients
Provide general surgical cover for major trauma patients
Surgical Assessment Unit management and supervision of junior team in SAU
Elective outpatient clinics and relevant administration
Elective theatre lists of general and sub-speciality

On call co mmitment

On call arrangements are being reviewed. Current on call frequency is 1:6. Following review and recruitment on call frequency is likely to reduce to 1:8 (1:16 on each site). On call duties are described earlier.
