Description

The role
The Financial Times is seeking a reporter for its new central banking hub.

Designed for professionals, the hub will offer users high quality information and commentary on monetary policy so that they are better able to do their jobs.

It will build scenarios for the likely interest rate decisions in the US, Eurozone, UK and Japan.

You will follow the data, speeches, financial market trends and write commentary on the likely consequences for monetary policy initially in these four key economies.

This will involve a specialised focus on central banks and their officials.

An important aspect of the role is economic analysis of information relevant to monetary policy, an ability both to synthesise this quickly and explain how it changes thinking on future interest rate decisions.

We are looking for someone with a passion for economics who enjoys quantitative analysis and wants to explain their thinking in clear and understandable forms of writing.

You will also be able to write for the FT, contributing to make the central banking hub a must-read product for professional users.

This is a start up venture within the FT, so it will be an exciting and dynamic opportunity.

Key responsibilities

You will have high quality economic skills, preferably some reporting or analytical background and be comfortable working in a fast-paced role in a core part of FT output.

The job will combine analysis, future gazing, scenario building and writing on monetary policy. It could provide the perfect springboard for a wider FT career.

We are looking for someone with sufficient skills in each area, a desire to learn more and to develop their skills more broadly.

You will need to be able to collaborate with economics reporters and commentators across the FT. If you are someone who is fascinated by economics and monetary policy, then this is the job for you.

What we are looking for

  • Proficiency in economics and analysing monetary policy
  • Numeracy and the ability to think statistically
  • Excellent communication skills, particularly the ability to explain your quantitative analysis work simply to nonspecialist audiences
  • An interest in global economics, business and politics
  • Passionate about continuously learning in order to keep your skills at the forefront of current practice

Your previous work does not have to be in journalism or economics although having either or both would be an advantage.

Desirable Skills
We don't expect you to have all of these skills, but the ability to demonstrate experience of one or more of the following would be beneficial:

  • Relevant training in statistics or data science
  • An existing body of journalistic work in economics or monetary policy
  • Professional expertise in monetary policy analysis
  • An academic economics background
