An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our busy, friendly orthotics service, based at Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton. New graduates will start on band 5, moving up to band 6 after one year and fulfilment of competencies. This is an ideal way to have career progression. If you have more experience, you will start on band 6. The service is staffed with orthotist, hand therapist, orthotics practitioner, apprentice orthotist, administrators and administration manager. We have our own department, so everyone works together and learns together. The caseload is varied, from footwear, to spinal braces. Adults and children.

We also have an apprentice orthotist, and you will have the opportunity to work with the apprentice orthotist, thus developing clinical teaching skills.

To work as part of the orthotics team providing a comprehensive orthotics service to patients.

To use orthotic knowledge and skills to assess, prescribe, measure and fit a wide range of off the shelf and bespoke orthotic devices.

To work within BAPO standards, always comply with orthotics service procedures and MHRA legislation.

To provide high-quality, cost-effective care for all our patients, ensuring that patient satisfaction, providing a professional, supportive and friendly environment is at the forefront of everything we do.

Musgrove Park Hospital is a busy, dynamic district general hospital. The orthotics service is highly regarded, and we have referrals from GP's consultants, and AHP's.

Our workload is busy and varied, ranging from the work our hand therapists do, to a wide variety of patients seen by orthotists, and practitioners.

Providing a professional, friendly service to patients is at the forefront of everything we do.

With regular one to one's appraisals, opportunities for a variety of CPD, and teaching, our service is the place to be

  • To be accountable to the orthotics service manager (OSM).
  • To work closely with the senior orthotist, OSM, orthotics practitioner, apprentice orthotist. other allied health professionals AHPS, and the administration team within the service.
  • To have excellent verbal and written communication skills and work to an agreed quality statement for the orthotics service to provide a high quality, patient centred, cost effective orthotics service.
  • To use a range of verbal and nonverbal communication to communicate effectively with patients/carers/parents/guardians/representatives.
  • To use a range of verbal and nonverbal communication to communicate effectively with therapy/nursing/administration/medical colleagues.
  • To communicate the rationale behind the prescription of specific orthoses, and on
- going treatment plans to patients/relatives/carers.

  • To communicate to patients/carers/relatives the orthotics service policy on number of orthotic devices, (including insoles and footwear) patients are entitled to per annum.
  • To communicate to patients/carers/relative the orthotics service procedures on repair of orthotic devices, (including insoles and footwear).
  • To prepare and document the appropriate prescription and order to meet the clinical needs of the patient and comply with MHRA legislation. This may be paper and/or electronic.
  • To develop positive working relationships with technicians involved in the manufacturing process of modular and bespoke orthotic devices to ensure the orthosis is supplied to specification, is of a high standard with good longevity, and is cost effective.
  • To develop positive working relationships with orthotics companies contracted to provide goods to the orthotics service and develop good working relationships with their technical staff.
  • To follow orthotics service procedures to ensure the patient/carer understands and accepts the prescribed orthosis. The orthotist must ensure the patient/carer understands how to use, care for, and maintain the orthotic device. The orthotist will ensure they give the patient/carer all relevant written information about their orthotic device, contact details for the orthotics service, the policy of repeat orthoses, and information about the orthotics service caseload as outlined in the orthotics procedures file and MHRA legislation
  • To give comprehensive footwear advice to patients, who on assessment do not need medically prescribed footwear, but can be managed in appropriate selfpurchased off the shelf footwear.
  • To work to BAPO, and MPH NHS Trust standards, and MHRA legislation when assessing for, measuring and fitting off the shelf, modular, and bespoke orthotic devices.
  • To prepare and document the appropriate prescription and order, to meet the clinical needs of the patient and comply with MHRA legislation using paper and/
