Askham Bryan College is a specialist land-based college based across the North of England with centres in York, Middlesbrough, Saltaire, Wakefield and Newcastle.


We offer a wide-ranging curriculum to our Further Education students, including Agriculture, Horticulture, Agriculture, Animal Management, Countryside and the Environment, Engineering, Equine, Floristry, Motorsport, Professional Tree Surgery, Outdoor Adventure Sport, Sports Development, Coaching and Fitness and Uniformed Public Services.

We have an exciting opportunity for an individual to join our Student Services Department here at our York campus. We are seeking an individual who will be the first point of contact for students who need some support. The Student Services Team is split into Student Support Services, Residential Services and the Employability Team.

This role will be working with the support services and the residential team, resulting in an exciting and varied role and working with students to ensure they receive the mental health and wellbeing support they need in order to achieve their potential at College.


The successful applicant should have a good standard of written English and be able to communicate effectively with a wide variety of people.

They should have excellent knowledge in mental health and experience in dealing with distressed young people. They will value accurate data and understand the importance of detail and accuracy when recording information.

Main Purpose of the role

  • To lead and line manage the Wellbeing Team, including Student Wellbeing Coordinators, Counsellors and wellbeing workers across a number of sites (York, Middlesbrough, Wakefield and Saltaire).
  • To coordinate, manage and deliver provision of outstanding counselling/mental health support to Askham Bryan College students.
  • To address the mental wellbeing needs of students, coordinate provision of appropriate in college support, and referral on to specialist external agencies, where necessary.
  • To provide information, advice and support on student mental health to College staff. To act as a Designated Safeguarding Officer at your base campus.

Key Tasks I responsibilities:


  • All tasks to be carried out in a consistent manner with the corporation's culture.
  • Develop and maintain the above services within the college ensuring all activities are undertaken in accordance with College policy.
  • Contribute to the development of an ongoing and responsive mental health policy in conjunction with the Executive Director of HE and Students and the Director of Student Services, drafting policy and procedures for delivery of mental health provision within the College.
  • Ensure accessibility and promote mental health awareness and awareness of the services within the College community, and network with external specialist agencies in order to provide comprehensive support to students.
  • Coordinate and monitor the development of relevant selfhelp material for students.
  • Coordinate and provide immediate mental health support and/or counselling in response to particular events in exceptional circumstances (e.g. sudden bereavement within college or other traumatic events).
