Job description:


We have an exciting opportunity for a property professional to join us at the MCA in this newly established role as the Assistant Director of Estates.


This is a key role in which the successful applicant will provide leadership for the entire estates team, working closely with the Director of Finance, Compliance and Estates to set the strategic direction for Property & Facilities Management within the MCA and provide a responsive and customer focussed service offering advice, direction and assurance on all property issues to ensure the highest delivery standards.


The Assistant Director of Estates will have line management responsibility for two direct reports - the Head of Property and the Head of Facilities - providing support and overseeing these functions to ensure all activities are aligned to MCA's strategic vision and operational requirements.


The role holder will engage with a wide variety of interesting internal and external stakeholders ranging from HM Coastguard and UK Maritime Services colleagues to the Cabinet Office, supplier contacts and legal professionals to ensure the effective management of the MCA Estate.

This includes the procurement and management of national contracts, robust mechanical and electrical services, compliance with building legislation and facilities management.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Providing estates expertise, strategy, and direction on all major property initiatives, including pro-actively managing property assets and lifecycle planning, identifying opportunities for disposal, co-location, and rationalisation.
  • Being directly responsible for providing informed, timely and accurate advice, direction and assurance to the MCA's Executive and other senior stakeholders on all major aspects of Estates and Facilities Management.
  • Responsible for ensuring that each property within the portfolio is managed in accordance with the Government Functional Standard for property.
  • Ensuring that a high level of internal customer service is provided by the Estates team, leading the interpretation of business needs of the organisation in conjunction with senior management, and translating them into property requirements for the organisation's property strategy and plans.

This is a fantastic opportunity to enjoy an exciting challenge leading a team and taking responsibility for managing circa 480 properties across the UK, spanning sites equipped to support the HM Coastguard's emergency service function such as radio sites and Coastguard rescue centres to those supporting all other key functions of the MCA such as the Headquarters and UK Maritime Service's Marine Offices.


The estates team is currently under restructure and the Assistant Director of Estates will have the opportunity to set the strategic direction and help shape the new estates function.

This role will be based in the Southampton HQ.

MCA supports flexible working and operates a hybrid working model between home and office for this role, giving you greater flexibility over where and when you work.

Details of the arrangement will be discussed further with your line manager.


There will be a requirement for travel on official duty within the UK, which may involve overnight stays away from home.
