Job Summary
The Trust has a statutory duty to deliver a service and environment that protects patients, staff and visitors.

The corporate Risk Management Team supports the Trust in this duty by ensuring there are Trust wide systems in place to enable the senior managementteam and Divisions to effectively identify, manage and continuously learn from areas of risk to patient and staff safety.

The role of the post holder is to act as the Trust's competent person on health and safety and advise on best practice and legislativerequirements.

This post provides expert advice, support and training on health and safety to all staff.
The post holder will manage the Central Alert System and process for the Trust.

This will include ensuring that the appropriate staff groups are involvedwith the initial notification and relevance of the alert/safety notice to the Trust.

The post holder will work with the Trust staff and services to co-ordinate the management of the alert and will ensure that actions are put in place to ensure compliance withthe alert/safety notice and that the specified deadlines are met.

The post holder will also monitor these actions and complete random audits to ensure that the actions have been completed and that compliance has been maintained.


Job Duties

  • Developing & managing processes to adhere to Trust and national policy
  • Prepare and analyse complex information in relation to incidents, Employer and Public Liability claims and the Trust Risk Register.
  • Prepare and deliver training to Trust staff in relation to areas relevant to the Risk Management Portfolio, main focus to be on health and safety requirements
  • Meet and liaise with patients and members of the public regarding sensitive issues, such as unacceptable behaviour, loss of property, allegations of violence and aggression, and to support patient or staff to proceed with the relevant legal processes asappropriate.
  • Technical Advisor to Trust staff on risk management issues
  • Support the management of legal claims relating to Visitors or Staff
  • To hold difficult conversations either by telephone or in attendance where required in the Hospital
  • To ensure that relevant health and safety and security policies and processes are in place to keep any visitors to site are kept safe as far as possible.
  • As Health and Safety Lead, support and contribute to the development of the Trust's Risk Register on all H&S nonclinical risks, ensuring best practice at all times in the management of adverse events and the implementation of action plans, supporting staffand managers in developing health & safety management systems.
  • Maintain and prepare Induction training for new starters to the Trust, to provide them with an overview of how the Risk Management department operates and their role within it.
  • Provide advice, consultation and support to managers and staff as part of the overall approach to risk identification and reduction in numbers, probability and impact of health & safety incidents.
  • Support staff in realising a culture of positive and proactive health and safety management, risk assessment and learning. This may include supporting staff to complete the relevant Risk Assessments.
  • Develop and manage communication links with external regulatory bodies, in particular the Health and Safety Executive, and to act as the point of contact / coordinator in the event of external visits and audits.
  • Produce clear, concise written reports for presentation to senior management groups. This will include, but not be limited to, preparing reports for Health and Safety Group, Medical Devices Group and related risk management reports.
  • To advise, from a health and safety perspective, whether cases may be defendable or whether redress should be considered (in order to lower legal costs) and gather evidence to support the above e.g. photographs, statements etc

Education/ Qualifications

  • The post holder will hold a relevant technical qualification
