How to Keep Remote Teams from Feeling Isolated
Since COVID hit in 2020, remote working has been a standard part of the average workday. For many businesses, these remote teams have worked well, with many having seen a sharp rise in productivity levels and employee happiness.
Of course, there is still the worry of remote workers feeling isolated. Despite being part of the team, members still don’t physically see any of their co-workers, and in a poorly managed business, that could lead to loneliness and poor communication.
Fortunately, that does not have to be the case. If you manage a remote team, use this guide to prevent isolation.
Improve Internal Communications
Improving internal communications is the best way to prevent isolation in remote teams. You can do that by having daily chats, checking in regularly, and having an open door for online communication. Remember – it’s better to communicate too much than too little.
An internal communications agency is an excellent option for businesses looking to improve their communication standards. With the assistance of experts and a quality communication platform, you can empower, engage, and inspire your remote team.
Host More Online Meetings
While no one wants to spend their entire day attending meetings with no end in sight, you should still try to increase the number of meetings with remote employees – especially if you don’t host enough already. One meeting a day is a good starting point, with the morning being an excellent time to host a meeting to ensure everyone is on the right track. From there, you can gauge whether you need to host more or less to keep remote workers engaged.
Align Missions and Values
While communicating is essential, that’s not the only way to make remote workers feel less isolated. Bringing them in on the company’s missions and values is another way. Let them know what the company is about and how their work contributes to the mission as a whole, and they will feel like a valuable part of the team.
Recognize Great Work
It can be challenging for remote employees to work hard from their homes, only for that work not to get recognized. Eventually, this will contribute to feelings of isolation and low motivation levels. So, to avoid that, recognize when remote employees do something well – even the small things! It will make them feel valued and part of the team.
Improve the Remote Onboarding Experience
If you’re hiring remote employees, create an interactive onboarding process that cements the newbies into the workplace culture. Get them to meet the whole team on a video, send them videos detailing the company’s values, and help them create connections with teammates they’ll be working with on workforce platforms. By starting remote workers on a positive, inclusive note, they are more likely to feel welcomed and comfortable at the company despite never setting foot inside the building!
A remote team can be just as productive and engaged as one that works in the office – it’s all about improving internal communications and keeping them in the know. Do that, and your remote team won’t feel isolated no matter where they work from.
