Remote Working Skills: Lessons From My Journey Since 2009

When I first started working remotely back in 2009, after the birth of my first child, it wasn’t something people openly asked for. Hybrid and remote work were quietly frowned upon, and many of my mum friends feared losing their roles or careers if they admitted they needed flexibility. They developed coping techniques to hide anxiety, exhaustion, and the financial pressures of trying to be “100% everywhere.”

The truth is, circumstances had drastically changed — and they continue to evolve. I was fortunate to be able to work flexibly, blending remote and hybrid schedules. But it wasn’t just about convenience. It required building internal team structures and processes that supported this new way of working. Over time, I discovered that remote work didn’t just help me balance life and career — it opened doors to leadership opportunities, improved staff retention, and created healthier, more sustainable ways of working.

✨ My Top 3 Remote Working Skills for High Focus

Dress for the office, even at home It may sound simple, but putting on office clothes, doing my hair, and wearing makeup helped me shift into a professional mindset. It created a boundary between “home mode” and “work mode,” which is essential when both happen in the same space.

Set fixed hours — and stick to them. Consistency is key. By setting clear working hours and not changing them, I built trust with my team and clients. It also helped me protect my personal time, reducing burnout and maintaining focus.

Create a dedicated office space. Having a physical space for work — even a small corner — made a huge difference. It signalled to my brain (and my family) that I was “at work,” helping me stay organised and focused while minimising distractions.

💡 Final Thoughts

Remote work has come a long way since 2009. What was once seen as risky or unconventional is now a mainstream way of working. My journey taught me that success in remote work isn’t just about technology. It’s about discipline, structure, and mindset. By dressing the part, setting boundaries with time, and creating a dedicated workspace, I’ve been able to thrive in remote and hybrid environments while supporting both my career and my family.

What your story?

Enjoy your weekend and Merry Christmas!
