You will be welcomed into the team and given all the training, support and equipment needed.

In this role you will be part of a diverse team of 12 working on our rivers and tidal defences to prevent and respond to flooding and pollution.

Our main important structure is Queenborough Barrier, this tidal door is situated at the mouth of the Queenborough Creek. This structure helps to prevent flooding to properties and businesses within the Queenborough area.

You will also:

  • Contribute to the development and management of small projects such as vegetation management or construction works.
  • Maintain rivers and repair defences to provide a high standard of flood protection.
  • Share skills, knowledge, and experience with the team and be a role model through your professionalism.
  • Work efficiently, safely and to a high standard, often within CDM (Construction Design Management) regulations.
  • Work in all weather conditions, whether it's leading a group cutting weed in the river, repairing a fence at one of our critical sites, assisting with the removal of a fallen tree from the river or responding to pollution at a fishery.
  • Provide response to flood and environmental incidents inside and outside of normal working hours.


Our response may be called upon 24hrs a day 365 days a year and you will be expected to take your place on a rota for this once trained.


  • The team 1
  • We carry out a maintenance programme on rivers and watercourses around the Swale Area from Gillingham to Whitstable and Sheppey. Responding to environmental incidents, such as flooding and pollution, both day and night. We also work across the country when other areas need assistance responding to environmental incidents.


  • Experience/skills required

  • A positive, adaptable approach and a friendly 'can do' attitude as a committed team player.
  • Leadership on health & safety, conservation & environmental awareness ensuring compliance with Environment Agency policies and standards.
  • Good communication skills, working effectively with team members, landowners, and the public
  • Be able to make sound decisions sometimes under pressure.
  • Ability to plan and organise equipment and materials for work to be carried out on time and to standard.
  • A good level of environmental awareness and some experience in asset operation or maintenance/incident response/use of equipment/tools is an advantage, although full training will be provided.
  • Some competence in using IT devices, such as an iPad, and willing to learn our inhouse systems

  • Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.
You will be based in Cambray Farm Depot in Bobbing, Sittingbourne, Kent, ME9 8QL and interviews will be held on 6th, 7th or 8th December

You will be required to drive to Cambray, then share a badged EA vehicle to go out to site.
