  • Help make a real difference in protecting and enhancing our fisheries habitats and stocks for current and future generations.

We're looking for a motivated individual to join our Solent and South Downs Fisheries, Biodiversity & Geomorphology Teams as a Fisheries Enforcement Officer (FEO).

This exciting opportunity will suit an individual with strong communication skills and experience of tackling crime/regulatory non-compliance issues and criminal investigations.

This post will be largely field-based, requiring travel and work across Hampshire, the Isle of Wight and Sussex as needed.

You will undertake regular fisheries enforcement patrols, planning and conducting live fish movement audits, High Impact Fisheries Enforcement (HIFE) and rod licence checking across Hampshire, the Isle of Wight and Sussex areas.

You'll collect evidence, interview suspects and prepare casefiles and/or develop actions to disrupt illegal activities, and be able to proactively establish good working relationships with colleagues and partners.

Fisheries Enforcement Officers need to be flexible, adaptable and respond where pressures demand. This role will require extended periods of patrol in environments which may be physically challenging or even hostile.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do.

You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident.

This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.

  • The team
  • You'll join an awardwinning Team comprised of Fisheries Officers and Specialists, Biodiversity Officers and Specialists and a Geomorphology Technical Specialist. In your role you'll work closely with Fisheries team members on enforcement work. To achieve our aims, we work closely with regulatory and specialist technical Teams across Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Sussex Areas and with enforcement, fisheries and intelligence colleagues in other Areas and Nationally. We also work with external enforcement bodies.

  • Experience/skills required

  • You will have experience investigating crime and taking enforcement action, with a proven track record of tackling crime.

You should have knowledge and skills including:

  • Excellent administration skills, including an ability to keep accurate records, organise and manage your workload and input/retrieve data
  • Experience in an investigatory regulator role and knowledge of the legislation governing criminal investigations
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • An ability to deal with hostile situations and proactively manage the health and safety of yourself and others
Due to the nature of the role, a full UK driving licence is essential. You must be able to swim as you will often work in/near water.

The following experience is desirable:

  • Experience of working in the field of fisheries enforcement and a knowledge of angling
  • Experience of conflict resolution techniques
  • Boat handling experience / qualifications
  • Knowledge of fisheries legislation
  • Contact and additional information
  • The role requires participation in an outofhours standby rota, with periods of unsociable working, and routinely working on either a Saturday or a Sunday, with a weekday restday.
We support flexible working hours and practices.

We offer a range of employee benefits and encourage you to keep developing your skills and professional knowledge throughout your career.

Interviews will be held in-person at our Worthing office.
