    We are recruiting for a Phlebotomist who wishes to join our busy Phlebotomy team at #TeamIOWNHS. You should share our passion and drive to ensure that our patients and staff receive quality and compassionate care and work with us to ensure the Trust continues its journey towards great people, great place.

    The Phlebotomy team provides a phlebotomy service to the hospital wards and the walk-in clinic.

    Applicants ideally will have recent / previous experience in phlebotomy. Refresher training can be arranged if required and personal development is actively encouraged.

    Main duties of the job

    As a Phlebotomist you would be part of the phlebotomy team working within the wards and clinic collecting blood samples. You should be an effective communicator, have a keen eye for detail and be able to work under pressure.

    At the present time the department operates between 07:30 and 16:30 Monday to Friday plus weekend shifts. Successful candidates will be required to work flexibly across all shifts and any future potential areas where phlebotomy is required.

    Detailed job description and main responsibilities

    To contribute to the provision of a high quality, phlebotomy service for patients on the Isle of Wight by obtaining blood samples from patients through venepuncture and ensuring that blood samples are labelled correctly in preparation for being forwarded to laboratories.

    The collection of blood by venepuncture will take place in designated areas i.e. the Phlebotomy Outpatients Departments at St. Mary's and the wards at St. Mary's Hospital. However, phlebotomists may also be asked to attend other Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Trust properties in the performance of their duties.

    Job Statement

    · To carry out duties as allocated by the Phlebotomy Supervisor and to work under the direct supervision of the Senior Phlebotomist on duty until competency has been achieved after which may be remotely supervised.

    · To meet, greet and attend to all patients in a polite, helpful and understanding manner and be responsible for the preparation of adults and children (from 10 yrs old) prior to the collection of blood samples in order to minimise concern or distress

    · To develop an understanding to assess the patients' physical and mental state in order to ascertain their suitability to undergo venepunctur e.

    · To ensure that the patient's identity is positively checked prior to the procedure by asking the patient to verbally confirm their name and date of birth and check this against the information on the request form and/or wristband* (*in patient only) and to address any discrepancies before commencing the blood draw.

    · To take blood samples from veins by use of evacuated blood collection systems having undertaken the prescribed training and development relating to the collection of blood from venous sites referring to the Senior Phlebotomist as required.

    · To develop an understanding of the laboratory requirements whe re specialized tests are requested, (e.g. patients' medication, requirement to fast, temperature controlled samples and cross match samples) and to develop an understanding of policies and procedures pertaining to phlebotomy and be aware of changing policies and procedures.

    · To maintain a satisfactory working relationship with Trust staff in wards and clinics, liaising between laboratory staff and patients/wards where contra-indications to specimen collection are identified. To be responsible for taking the appropriate corrective action where there is a problem in obtaining blood samples.

    Person specification Qualifications and Role Specific Knowledge

    • Understanding of job role.

    Physical Skills

    • Able to sit or stand in a restricted position for a substantial portion of the time (standing/ bending/ stooping to obtain blood samples).
    • Able to exert moderate physical effort when manoeuvring patients in wheelchairs or helping elderly/ infirm patients into and out of phlebotomy chairs and / or pushing phlebotomy trolleys.
    • Able to concentrate for long periods of time with good hand/ eye coordination skills.
    • Possess good handwriting and keyboard skills.
    • Able to deal with frequent exposure to highly unpleasant working conditions with daily exposure to blood and other body fluids.
    • Able to deal with exposure to verbal/physical aggression in a compassionate and sympathetic manner.

    Abilities

    • Ability to work as part of a team.
    • Ability to work accurately whilst remaining calm and with a professional manner.
    • Ability to request assistance to assess the suitability of veins for venepuncture and decision on whether a particular sample is of the quality required for analysis.

    Communication Skills

    • Be able to understand how to communicate and reassure patients in an empathetic and supportive manner referring to more senior phlebotomists as necessary.
