    The Director, Clinical Research Equity – Community Engagement is a highly experienced and visionary leader responsible for leading community partnerships for enabling diverse patient representation across global clinical trials. As the Director, you will be responsible for developing and implementing community based strategic initiatives to drive diversity in clinical trials, while ensuring oversight and coordination across various internal workstreams. This role will liaise with other stakeholders across Global Development (GD) and the enterprise to communicate a coherent, aligned strategy across all levels of the organization. This role requires a strong understanding of change management, risks, metrics, and the ability to navigate complex organizational dynamics. You will be able to plan budgets for external sponsorship opportunities. This role will focus on equipping employees within GD with a clear Diversity Equity Inclusion in Clinical Trials (DEICT) strategy and developing new tactics to reach diverse populations as an integral member of the central DEICT strategy team. This role requires a strategic mindset, effective stakeholder management, and the ability to manage multiple ongoing initiatives simultaneously. The role will support building the visibility of DEICT efforts within the organization and propel J&J further as a leader in DEICT across industry.

    Internal facing:

    • You will develop and lead the execution of a comprehensive strategic plan for promoting diversity in clinical trials across different workstreams, with a particular focus on community engagement, providing both oversight and guidance to ensure seamless coordination and alignment of DEICT efforts.
    • The role will mitigate risks associated with diversity initiatives by identifying potential challenges and implementing proactive solutions. The role will present DEICT strategy and process updates, as needed in written and in live forums.
    • The role will act as an expert in industry trends, best practices, and regulatory guidelines related to diversity in clinical trials, and represent the company in external forums, conferences, and industry events to promote our commitment to diversity in clinical research.

    External facing:

    • The role will cultivate strategic relationships with community engagement partners to create robust strategies, identify impact metrics, and hold teams accountable to drive reputational impact for J&J.
    • The role will support external partnerships, including public-private collaborations, community engagement and vendor collaboration efforts in the US and beyond.

    Focused on impact:

    • The role will establish key performance indicators to evaluate effectiveness of diversity tactics globally and help embed mindset change across the organization.
    • The role is accountable for providing regular updates and reports to executive leadership and stakeholders on the progress of diversity initiatives.

    Primary responsibilities:

    • Responsible for overseeing various workstreams, and working across the enterprise to drive process improvements, metrics, risks, develop innovative approaches to improve diversity
    • Oversee the development of innovative, cohesive strategy that drives community engagement to bolster DEICT efforts
    • Matrix leadership accountabilities, including managing and developing talent
    • Develop, track and report on key performance indicators and metrics to support the continuous improvement and effectiveness of DEICT efforts
    • Develop, implement, and enforce key 'Diversity in Clinical Trials' standards, processes, and templates to ensure consistent messaging across the organization. Involved in representing DEICT in internal and external meetings as needed.

    Qualifications:

    Education:

    • Bachelor's degree in scientific or healthcare discipline or relevant field required
    • PharmD, MD or PhD preferred

    Required:

    • 10+ years of experience with a minimum of 6-10 years proven clinical trial expertise
    • Extensive experience leading diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in the pharmaceutical or healthcare industry
    • Expert project management capabilities, knowledge of clinical trial operations and associated challenges, particularly regarding diversity and inclusion
    • Experience working with community engagement partners and/or patient advocacy groups
    • Proven track record of successfully developing and implementing strategic initiatives (including mitigating risks, driving metrics, and building cohesive strategies) at a management level
    • Exceptional leadership, communication, and influencing skills to drive change and collaborate with diverse stakeholders internally and externally
    • Experience in successfully leading teams in global matrixed organizations and a demonstrated ability to work across functional and geographic boundaries and influence without authority
    • A demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, problem-solve and work independently will be needed. Demonstrated ability to develop deep insights, uncover unmet needs, drive innovation, inspire, develop, collaborate, and lead within a global matrixed team is required.
    • Outstanding communication and presentation skills, has a strong understanding of evolving D&I landscape and experienced in communications with scientific audiences.
    • Up to 20% travel – Domestic & International

    Preferred:

    • Experience in the pharmaceutical industry
    • Experience in Clinical development, clinical operations, regulatory affairs, or patient advocacy in large complex organizations
    • Proven people management and leadership skills, preferably balanced between on- and off-shore teams.
    • Proven capability to lead on external partnerships with other Pharma companies, e.g., TransCelerate, IHI/IMI, PhRMA, etc.

    The anticipated base pay range for this position in the US is $157,000 to $271,400.

    The anticipated base pay range for this position in San Francisco Bay Area is $193,000 to $312,110.

    • The compensation and benefits information set forth in this posting applies to candidates hired in the United States. Candidates hired outside the United States will be eligible for compensation and benefits in accordance with their local market.

    The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation's performance over a calendar/ performance year. Bonuses are awarded at the Company's discretion on an individual basis.

    Employees and/or eligible dependents may be eligible to participate in the following Company sponsored employee benefit programs: medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short- and long-term disability, business accident insurance, and group legal insurance.

    Employees may be eligible to participate in the Company's consolidated retirement plan (pension) and savings plan (401(k)).

    This position is eligible to participate in the Company's long-term incentive program.

    Employees are eligible for the following time off benefits:

    • Vacation – up to 120 hours per calendar year
    • Sick time – up to 40 hours per calendar year; for employees who reside in the State of Washington – up to 56 hours per calendar year
    • Holiday pay, including Floating Holidays – up to 13 days per calendar year
    • Work, Personal and Family Time – up to 40 hours per calendar year
