Job summary:

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) is the UK Government's fourth largest spending Department with a budget exceeding £36Bn year.

It spends its money on a wide range of contracts from property and facilities management, corporate services, complex IT infrastructure and services, food, clothing, and medical supplies, to large equipment platforms such as ships, aircraft, and vehicles, all of which are managed by the Commercial Function.


The Commercial Communications Team is responsible for all internal communications activities and works closely with internal and external stakeholders to engage and inform over 2,500 Commercial Staff located across the UK.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

This role can be based in either Bristol Abbey Wood or London, but we support flexible working and operate a hybrid working model between home and office, giving you greater flexibility over where and when you work.

Job description


As the Commercial Communications Officer, you will support the implementation and delivery of the Commercial Function Communications and Engagement Strategy and Plan.

You will be responsible for supporting the day-to-day delivery of the function's communication activity and managing the logistics for the event programme.


The main responsibilities, but not limited to, are:

Manage the delivery of our regular communication products

  • Work with stakeholders to identify stories and articles which should be shared with the community.
  • Collate, write, edit, proofread, and secure approval to publish regular products on time including the weekly newsletter.
  • Continuously improve the format and content of our regular products based on analytics and feedback.
  • Monitoring the communications inbox, responding to messages and enquires within a timely manner.
  • Management of stakeholder database and distribution lists.

Support the development of our online content

  • Support the daytoday upkeep of the intranet (The Commercial Hub), ensuring links are working and content is in date.
  • Publish new content and news articles to the Commercial Hub
  • Graphic asset creation and image selection for communication activity.

Support delivery of the Commercial Events and Engagement Programme

  • Take an active role in the organisation of the events and engagement programme for both virtual and inperson events including the annual Commercial Conference for people, the MOD Commercial Awards, Quarterly Senior Civil Service Engagement events and the Commercial Board Meet and Greet.
  • Work with stakeholders to manage event logistics including invitations, attendee management, venue finding and liaison, technical processes, agenda management and speaker briefings.

Lead on Commercial webinars using MS Teams
  • Arranging, Recording, and managing the session.
  • Responsibility for the evaluation of the events including producing evaluation forms and providing full reporting on event attendee data for internal reports.

Person specification:


Essential:


  • Good team player, with strong organisational skills, willingness to be flexible and support priority work as required
  • Able to operate under pressure, maintain quality, make decisions and build relationships
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Be willing to undertake Defnet intranet publisher training

Desirable Skills/Experience

  • Working knowledge and use of digital programs including Office 365, Adobe Creative Cloud including InDesign and Photoshop, Mailchimp and/or equivalent.
  • Experience of using website content management systems.
  • Event management experience of the start to end process, including inperson and virtual events.
