    Main duties of the job

    As a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Paediatric Spinal Surgery well look to you to use your expertise to provide holistic and evidence-based care throughout the Spinal Surgery pathway, working alongside a multi-disciplinary team but also autonomously as you oversee the patient journey. Youll be an advocate for the patient, providing specialist nursing advice and emotional support throughout their journey with us while also driving service development and staff education.     The hospital has been consistently growing over the past fewyears, almost doubling since 2008. Our Paediatric wards hold 56 inpatient beds+ 11 day case and are equipped with the latest technology to provide advancedmedical and surgical care, including a 10 bed Paediatric Intensive Care Unitwhich reflects the acuity and complex nature of the children who are admittedto our hospital, including a proportion of international patients who are sentfor specialist treatment and/or investigations by their embassies.

    Our busy Childrens Outpatients Department has a large rangeof specialist Paediatrics clinics including: Cardiac/Congenital Heart, Allergy, Dermatology,General Paediatrics, ENT, Urology, Plastics, Orthopaedics and Spinal.

    The department consists of an expanding team made up ofhealth care assistants and registered nurses who all work as part of the widermultidisciplinary team.

    The childrens Out Patient Department is spread over threesites - two located on the hospitals main site in Great Portland street, withthe third newest addition to our facilities being located at The Shard, LondonBridge site, with its own designated Childrens Out Patient consulting suites.

    JOB SUMMARY:

    The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) will be the lead nurse,taking responsibility for providing specialist knowledge, clinical skills andexpertise in the treatment and management of Children and Young people withspinal conditions that attend the Portland Hospital for a variety of diagnosticand investigative procedures, as well as consultation and specialist advice.

    The CNS is responsible and accountable for their ownpractice, working independently delivering high quality, safe, evidence-basedpractice, whilst adhering to and following all appropriate corporate and localpolicies, complying with Clinical Governance at all times.

    Although the majority of the CNS role is workingindependently, the post holder is expected to work within the widermulti-disciplinary team including specialist spinal consultants, paediatricians,nursing and therapy staff.

    The post holder requires excellent organisational andmanagement skills with the ability to work flexibly responding to the needs ofthe service. They must maintain excellent communication and interpersonalskills and be able to converse with a broad spectrum of individuals effectivelyand professionally.

    MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    1. Leadership and Management

    To work in accordance with the NMC Code of Professionalconduct: standards for conduct, performance and ethics

    To be a highly visible role model to all nurses withinthe team.

    Provides expert guidance andongoing support to any nursing team involved in the care of children and youngpeople diagnosed with or undergoing investigations or treatment for spinalconditions.

    Leads and participates inco-ordinating all aspects of patient care, maintaining the best interest of thechild and family at all times.

    The post holder will be anadvocate for every child and young person attending the hospital for eitherinvestigations and/or procedures for spinal conditions.

    Liaises effectively withmembers of the multi professional team, patients, families and visitors.

    Participates in the ClinicalGovernance process, including risk assessing, incident reporting andinvestigation and provides accurate and contemporaneous reports to the SeniorManagement Team where required.

    Works in line with CQCrequirements and participates in relevant and appropriate meetings to ensurestandards are met and maintained.

    Participates in the auditprocess and if applicable presents relevant audit findings in relation to theirspeciality at the hospital Audit and Guidelines group.

    Contributes to the annualservice plan review process and ensures these are kept in line with the overallcompany business plan.

    The post holder will ensurethey receive customer feedback and create action plans accordingly to improvethe Patient Experience.

    2. ClinicalPractice

    Demonstrate excellent clinical skills and beaccountable for their own practice in line with NMC guidelines.

    The postholder will ensure their practice is up to date, evidenced based and followslocal and national (NICE) guidelines associated to the speciality.

    Actively participates in and develops patientclinical pathways for all children and young people attending the hospital forinvestigation and treatment of spinal conditions.

    Takes responsibility for theassessment, plan of care and setting of standards for all spinal patients, incollaboration with the multi professional team, in particular the specialist spinalconsultants.

    Manages their own patientcaseload providing directspecialist care to all spinal patients attending the hospital, ensuringtheir admission process is appropriately planned, pre-assessment has takenplace and discharge planning processes met in accordance with HCA dischargepolicy.

    Assists with pre-assessment ofpatients prior to surgery.

    Ensures care provided adheresto infection control standards.

    Ensures all medications, whereapplicable, are appropriately prescribed and administered in according withMedication Management Policy and HCA allergy protocols.

    Ensures safe and effective useof all equipment and supplies.

    Ensures the patient andfamilies are counselled on their condition and appropriate patient informationis readily available for them.

    The post holder will betrained to level 3 safeguarding of children and be able to identify childrenwho may be at risk and initiate appropriate escalation of concerns inaccordance with HCA policy and national guidance.

    3. Practice Development, Education andResearch

    The post holder will play an integral part inthe training, education and development of the nursing team delivering care tospinal patients, working collaboratively with the HCA education and practicefacilitating team.

    Responsible for initiating, developing andpromoting evidenced based practice within the speciality.

    Takes responsibility for assessing staff ascompetent to undertake specific clinical practices within their area ofexpertise.

    Ensures all hospital policies for the spinalservice are kept up to date and reviewed in accordance with HCA policy.

    The post holder will ensure they maintain theirskills and knowledge by attending relevant training and education opportunitiesto perform advanced clinical practices where appropriate.

    Provides effective health promotion to patientsand staff.

    Participate as appropriate in researchinitiatives relevant to speciality

    Demonstrate initiatives in the development ofnew knowledge and clinical skills aiming to ensure practice is evidence based.

    Ensures that local Spinaldatabase is up to date and data is entered in the British Spinal Register in atimely manner.

    Collaborates with the Infection Control and Prevention Nurse in theSurgical Site Surveillance data collection.

    4. Managing Information and Communication

    Ensurespatient privacy and dignity are respected at all times, maintaining patientconfidentiality and ensuring information is kept in accordance with Caldicottand Information Governance principles

    Maintains accurate and comprehensive patientrecords

    Maintains an accurate work diary detailing allactivities undertaken

    Provides evidence-based patient information asagreed with the patients consultant.

    Demonstrates excellent verbal and nonverbalcommunication skills at all times

    Displays the Positively Portland values at alltimes.

    Qualifications

    Essential

  • Childrens Nursing Qualification RN Child or RSCN with valid NMC registration
  • 5 years post registration experience in Childrens nursing
  • Relevant qualification in specialist area with at least 12 months experience
  • Mentorship qualification
  • Basic/Intermediate Paediatric Life Support
  • Experience of audit and research relevant to specialism
  • Knowledge of safeguarding processes, with up to date level 3 Safeguarding qualification
  • Knowledge of clinical governance and managing risk
