PhD Studentship: Study of Turbulence in Fusion Technology Using High Fidelity Simulations - Sheffield, United Kingdom - University of Sheffield

    Default job background
    Full time, Fixed-Term/Contract
    Description

A fully-funded PhD Studentship is available in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Sheffield to study turbulence in fusion technology using advanced computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The project is in collaboration with UKAEA and the Daresbury Laboratories at Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC).

Turbulence in the cooling system of a fusion machine such as the blanket is especially complex and its understanding and prediction is one of the major challenges facing the reactor design. The purpose of this project is to advance the understanding of the turbulence dynamics in a cooling system subjected to extremely strong heating and magnetic fields using direct numerical simulation (DNS). In particular, research will be carried out on the combined effects of magnatohydrodynamics (MHD), buoyancy and conjugate heat transfer in geometries relevant to fusion technology including the blankets or diverters. The PhD project will begin with the adaptation of an existing DNS code for fusion applications including the capacity of simulating the magnetic forces under various conditions. The turbulence subject to strong heating and MHD influences in a simple geometry will first be studied making use of recent advances in flow laminarisation and re-transition, and this will be followed by an investigation into more complex conditions and geometries that are directly relevant to fusion research facilities (such as CHIMERA at UKAEA) or component designs (such as those for STEP or DEMO).

    Person requirements.

The successful candidates are expected to hold a first class or upper second-class degree in engineering, physics or applied mathematics. Interests in CFD, computer programming and fusion technology are desirable but pre-knowledge and experience are not essential.

    Funding

The studentship is open to UK candidates only.

The studentship is available to start as soon as possible.

The annual tax-free stipend is at UKRI rate (currently £18,622 p.a.) plus an enhanced stipend of £2,500 for 3.5 years.

Generous funding is also available for training, and conference and workshop attendance.
